The Minot High girls tennis team took full advantage of the warm weather on Tuesday as it defeated Bismarck Century 7-2 at Hammond Park. The win moves the defending state champions to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play,

The Majettes won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches in the win.

Sidney Ressler, Kyllie Fettig, Sienna Ronning, Grace Olson and Ava Thuner all picked up singles wins for Minot High; while the doubles teams of Ressler and Lila Olson and Fettig and Reese Goodman were both victorious.

“I think we’re doing a lot of good things,” said Minot High girls tennis head coach Scott DeLorme. “After last week, we have said that doubles are what we really need to work on at this point. We worked on some things [Monday], and hopefully we’ll see a little more aggressive play. If we can get our doubles where we think we need to be, we’re gonna feel really good about things.”

Sidney Ressler and L. Olson defeated Kate Miller and Mykeela Jorgenson at No. 2 doubles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. The other two doubles matches both went to three sets. At No. 1 doubles, Century’s Erika Lee and Ava Dunlap knocked off Ronning and G. Olson 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-3. Minot High took the No. 3 doubles match though, as Fettig and Goodman defeated Kyla Jorgenson and Kyra Sahl, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

Ressler defeated Lee at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-1.

“I definitely didn’t play my best 100%, but you know, I gave it my all, went out there, tried to have a good time and ended up ultimately winning,” said Ressler.

The senior has been adjusting to the increased competition, as she plays No. 1 singles consistently for the first time this year.

“It’s difficult, challenging,” said Ressler. “I knew that was gonna be the case, but I’m going to go out and make the best of the season, and just keep grinding it out.”

Fettig won the No. 2 singles match over Dunlap in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.

“It was a good match,” said Fettig. “We haven’t played a lot of outdoor tennis, so it was definitely a different experience. I’m working on being more patient during points, because I have a tendency to just want to end the point, and I feel like I did that well today. That was really exciting.”

Other singles winners for the Majettes included Ronning over Miller at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-4; G. Olson over K. Jorgenson at No. 3 singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4; and Thuner over Stahl at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-1. The Patriots lone single win was at No. 5 doubles. M. Jorgenson beat L. Olson, 6-1, 6-3.

“I think we’re definitely playing where we need to be,” said Fettig. “I mean, there’s always room for improvement, but I think we’re sitting pretty well at this point in the season.”

Minot High will host Bismarck High on Thursday, April 25, at Hammond Park, with the first patches starting at 4:15 p.m.
