Boys Track & Field: Legacy’s Horne breaks 100m state record
On any other day, Minot High’s James Pallotta’s performance in the 100-meter dash at the BPS Invite at the MDU Resources Community Bowl on Thursday, April 16, would have been good enough to put him on top of the medal stand.
However, Bismarck Legacy’s Zayden Horne broke his own state record in the event, running a 10.27 to win the 100-meter dash over Pallotta, who finished second in 10.77. Horne set the previous state record when he ran a 10.37 last season.
The Sabers finished third at the 11-team event with 100 points, while the Magicians placed eighth with 51 points. Bismarck High won three events to claim the meet with 107.5 points. West Fargo Sheyenne represented the lone participant among the East Region and finished with 105 points. Bismarck Century (86.5) and Mandan (74) rounded out the top five. Minot North placed 10th with 33 points.
Pallotta also finished runner-up to Horne in the 200-meter dash, completing the sprint in 22.16. Horne didn’t set a state record, but did win the race with a time of 21.24.
Blake Anderson delivered the Magicians’ their lone event victory of the meet, claiming the shot put title with a toss of 55 feet, 5 inches. Anderson topped Minot North’s Ethan Howey, who took second with a throw of 52-1.5. Anderson finished runner-up to Century’s Jamison Lee in the discus with a toss of 159-3.
The Magicians placed two hurdlers in the top six in the 300m event. Logan Ludwig was fourth, finishing with a time of 41.52 and Ryder Sutton was sixth in 41.83. Their 4×100 relay team of Tariq Bell, Pallotta, Andrew Van Pelt and Ludwig took second behind Sheyenne with a time of 43.24. The Sentinels team consisting of Cian Hannon, Davyion Clemons, Aaron Garza and Cameron Jesz were right behind them in third at 43.52.
Jesz had a pair of fourth-place finishes in the high jump (6-0) and the triple jump (41-9).
Minot High will host the Minot Invite on Monday, April 20, at Duane Carlson Stadium at noon. The Minot Throwfest scheduled for Saturday, April 18, was postponed.
