Minot State athletes achieve academic honors

The NSIC released the All-Academic Teams for the winter sports season today and 31 Minot State student-athletes were honored for their efforts both in the classroom and in competition.

The 31 new honorees for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, and men’s wrestling brings the total for the year to 70 Beaver student-athletes earning NSIC All-Academic Team honors combined for the fall and winter NSIC sports. The NSIC All-Academic Team for spring sports – baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field – will be announced in May.

Leading the way was the Beaver indoor track and field program with 8 men and 8 women being named to the NSIC All-Academic Team, while 6 men’s wrestlers were honored, 5 men’s basketball players were named to the NSIC All-Academic Team, and 4 women’s basketball players were honored.

Of those 31 Minot State student-athletes named to the NSIC All-Academic Team, 18 earned special distinction as they were named to the NSIC All-Academic Team of Excellence.

To be named to the NSIC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must be an active member of their respective varsity traveling team, must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing, must have completed one full academic year at Minot State, and maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA. To earn NSIC All-Academic Team of Excellence honors the student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.60 cumulative GPA.

Indoor track and field: Camden Jasmin, a senior Mathematics major from Williston, N.D.; Jacob Jensen, a fifth-year senior majoring in Computer Science & Cyber Security and Operations from Belcourt, N.D.; Samuel Kreins, a senior Finance major from Reno, Nev.; Yonatan Neyshtadt, a senior Mathematics major from Richmond Hill, Ontario; Monica Okopal, a senior Nursing major from Reno, Nev.; Dallas Reese, a senior Art Education major from Wolf Point, Mont.; Nicole Reeves, a sophomore Special Education major from Anaheim, Calif.; Sidra Sadowsky, a junior Exercise Science and Rehabilitation major from Hettinger, N.D.; and Emery Smith, a sophomore Exercise Science & Rehabilitation major from North Salt Lake, Utah.

Men’s wrestling: Kelby Armstrong, a senior Biology major from Minot, N.D.; Logen Fischer, a graduate student majoring in Criminal Justice from Rapid City, S.D.; and Cayden White, a senior Mathematics and Computer Science major from Marysville, Wash.

Men’s basketball: Benjamin Bohl, a fifth-year senior majoring in Finance & Accounting from Minot, N.D.; Jaxon Gunville, a senior Finance & Accounting major from Minot, N.D.; and Caleb Van De Griend, a sophomore General Studies major from Bridgetown, Australia.

Women’s basketball: Vilborg Jonsdottir, a sophomore Exercise Science & Rehabilitation major from Njardvik, Iceland; Emma Mogen, a junior Nursing major from Watford City, N.D.; and Jaime Skeggs, a sophomore Nursing major from Mandurah, Western Australia.

Indoor track and field: Grayson Bonilla, a senior Biology major from Helena, Mont.; Paulette Dominguez, a junior Management major from Lauderhill, Fla.; Jessica Evenson, a sophomore Management major from Towner, N.D.; Kenzy Kellum, a senior Nursing major from Mountain View, Wyo.; Summer Krebsbach, a sophomore Criminal Justice major from Max, N.D.; Francis Short Bull, a fifth-year senior majoring in Exercise Science & Rehabilitation from New Town, N.D.; and Peyton Tuhy, a sophomore General Studies major from Hettinger, N.D.

Men’s wrestling: Brendan Barnes, a senior Business Education major from Kalispell, Mont.; Isaac Ortega, a junior Management major from Camano Island, Wash.; and Cannon Potts, a senior Biology major from Bend, Ore.

Men’s basketball: Dylan Gichaba, a junior Exercise Science & Rehabilitation major from Brooklyn Park, Minn.; and Quincy Minor Jr., a graduate student majoring in Sports Management from Milwaukee, Wis.

Women’s basketball: Emily Srejma, a sophomore Bioinformatics & Computational Biology major from Fargo, N.D.

Five Beavers basketball players named to Academic All-District Team

Five Minot State basketball players earned honors from the College Sports Communicators for their outstanding performance on the hardwood and in the classroom as they were named to the CSC Academic All-District Team for men’s and women’s basketball.

Earning this special honor were Ben Bohl, Jaxon Gunville, and Caleb Van De Griend from the Beaver men’s basketball team and Vilborg Jonsdottir and Jaime Skeggs from the Minot State women’s basketball team.

To be named to the Academic All-District Team a player must be at least a sophomore who is in their second season with their team, must have started 66 percent of the team’s games or played in 90 percent of the team’s games during the current season, and must maintain a 3.50 cumulative grade point average. .

Bohl is a fifth-year senior from Minot, North Dakota who is majoring in Finance & Accounting and who played and started 28 games for the Beavers, averaging 10.1 points and 2.3 rebounds per game with 45 3-pointers, 41 assists, and 17 steals.

Gunville is a senior from Minot, North Dakota who is majoring in Finance & Accounting and who played and started 29 games, averaging 10.1 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. He became the NCAA Division II-era leader in 3-pointers made with 205 in four seasons, hitting a team-best 73 on the year and adding 38 assists and 15 steals this season.

Van De Griend is a sophomore from Bridgetown, Australia who is majoring in General Studies who played in all 29 games for the Beavers, averaging 6.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game with 16 assists, 4 steals, and 8 blocked shots.

Jonsdottir is a sophomore from Njardvik, Iceland who is majoring in Exercise Science & Rehabilitation who played in 31 games, starting 30 as she averaged 3.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. She led the Beavers with 96 assists and made 26 steals.

Skeggs is a sophomore from Mandurah, Western Australia who is majoring in Nursing who played in all 32 games, starting 22, and averaged 7.3 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. She added 34 3-pointers, 42 assists, and 30 steals.
