Jovanta Johnson, Detroit, Mich., charged with robbery, terrorizing, felonious restraint

Jovanta Marquez Johnson, 27, Detroit, Mich., has been charged with tying up a man and a woman, robbing them at gunpoint and threatening to kill them at a northeast Minot apartment complex on Tuesday, according to Minot police.

He has been charged with two counts of Class B felony armed robbery, two counts of Class C felony terrorizing and two counts of Class C felony felonious restraint in district court in Minot.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, Johnson, who was known to the victims as “Jay,” had been helping someone move into another apartment and had been staying at the apartment as a guest. The male victim had gone into a back room to make a phone call and the woman was watching television in a bedroom. Johnson then ran past the bedroom and confronted the male victim in the back room while holding a gun. Johnson pointed the gun at the other man. Johnson said he would have killed the other man if they were in Detroit. Johnson then ordered the male victim into the hallway at gunpoint and ordered the woman to tie the other man’s hands and feet with construction cords. He then directed the woman to place duct tape over the man’s mouth and to tie her own feet together with a cord. Johnson then wrapped the woman’s hands with duct tape. Johnson took the man’s wallet and the woman’s purse, removed about $3,338 in cash, then took the male victim’s keys from the table and left the apartment. The man and woman were able to free themselves after Johnson left and called police. Police located Johnson and the vehicle, which belonged to a relative of one of the victims, and placed Johnson under arrest.

Johnson made an initial appearance on the charges on Wednesday before Judge Todd Cresap, who set bond at $250,000 cash or corporate surety. A preliminary hearing in the case is set for March 11. Johnson said he plans to hire his own attorney.

Ward County Assistant State’s Attorney John Gonzalez told the judge that Johnson is out on bond for Class B felony possession with intent to deliver a Schedule II drug in Mountrail County and the bonding company has filed a motion to revoke his bond in that particular case. Online court records show that 10-Minute Bail Bonds posted $20,000 cash or corporate surety for Johnson on Dec. 28 in the Mountrail County case. According to the probable cause affidavit in that case, a woman in Parshall had reported on Dec. 21 that she and her friends had received oxycodone pills from a residence at 100 2nd Street SE, Unit 420, in Parshall, which resulted in the death of a woman. The MHA Drug Task Force asked the Mountrail County Sheriff’s Department to assist in executing a search warrant at the address. Law enforcement officers found eight people at the residence, including Johnson. Johnson was found to be in possession of 116 pills and $3,375 in cash. A preliminary hearing in the drug dealing case is set for Jan. 28 in Stanley before Judge Richard Hagar.

Johnson declined to answer any questions after his arrest in Parshall. He also declined to speak with law enforcement officers when he was arrested Tuesday in Ward County on the robbery, terrorizing and felonious restraint charges.
