Jamie Schmidt, Winnipeg, charged with luring minor by computer

Jamie Frederick Douglas Schmidt, 44, Winnipeg, Manitoba, is charged in district court in Minot with luring a minor by computer, a Class B felony.

According to the Ward County Sheriff’s Department and a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, Schmidt believed he was coming to Minot to have sex with a 14-year-old boy he had met via the mobile app Grindr. The boy did not exist and Schmidt had been communicating with a fake profile set up by Deputy Jared Olson. According to the fake profile, the boy was supposedly born in May 2004. Schmidt began communicating with the fictitious boy on Grindr, an app used primarily by gay men seeking sex with other gay men, in March. Schmidt continued the sexually explicit communications with the boy throughout the spring and summer and set up an in person meeting near Polaris Park in Minot on Sunday. Law enforcement was waiting at the site and Schmidt was then taken into custody.

Schmidt was scheduled to make an initial appearance in district court in Minot on Monday before Judge Doug Mattson.
