Majettes flirt with history in defensive rout of Blue Jays

When the Minot High girls’ basketball team jumped out to a 46-6 halftime lead over Jamestown on Friday, it seemed as though a record might fall at the Blue Jays expense. The fewest points the Majettes’ program has given up was in 2016, when it held the Dickinson Midgets to 18 points.

The Blue Jays scored 19 points in the second half, off of five three-pointers, to avoid the record book, but the Minot High Majettes still cruised to a 75-25 Western Dakota Association (WDA) win. Of the nine field goals Jamestown scored, seven were three point field goals, including all six first-half points.

“When you send somebody in Class AA to the locker room at halftime and they’ve only got six points, like we did, you know you’re doing a pretty darn good job on defense,” said Minot High girls’ basketball head coach Jason Schwarz.

On offense, Maggie Fricke led the Majettes in scoring with 20 points, and teammates LeeLee Bell and Karew Lamoureux also reached double figures with 14 and 11 points respectively. In total, ten Minot High players scored.

“I think we played amazing,” said Bell. “We knew coming in that they were going to fight hard, and they weren’t going to let anything come down. I think we came out hard, especially in the second half, when we usually struggle with coming out hard. I’m proud of the girls that came in that don’t play varsity a lot. They still played amazing.”

Adam Papin/MDN The family of the late Jay Hight presents a check for $5,023 to the Minot High girls’ basketball program prior to the start of the Majettes’ game against Jamestown.

Other scorers for the Majettes included Sydney Aberle, seven points; Presley Bennett, six; Ariana Rood and Eve Knutson, five apiece; Kinley Bartsch, four; Journey Larson, two; and Leah Rosencrans, one.

Jamestown saw Haley Attleson and Mea Ulland each score six points, all off of three pointers, while Adisyn Yunck and Emily Ellingson added five points apiece. Mari Anderson scored a three-pointer in the second half to round out the Blue Jays scoring.

“One of the things we’ve been focusing on in practice is our defensive intensity and guarding the basketball a lot tougher and I think we did that tonight. We made a lot of things difficult for them on the offensive end,” said Schwarz.

Prior to the game, the family of the late Jay Hight presented a check to the Minot High girls’ basketball program in the amount of $5,023. Hight was a long-time supporter of the Majettes, who passed away recently from cancer. His daughter, Tori Hight played for Minot High from 2019-22.

“He was always really light-hearted around the team, and he always had a smile on his face,” said Schwarz. “Not only did Jay help us out financially with a few things, but he was just a great guy to be around. He loved sports, whether it be the Jets or [NDSU] Bison, so it was always great to have him around no matter when we went. We’re really going to miss him.”

The win keeps Minot High perfect on the year, as they improve to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the WDA. Jamestown drops to 2-5 overall and 0-4 in WDA play.

After a short break for the holidays, the Majettes will be hitting the road next week, traveling to both Minnesota and South Dakota to face off against some of the top competition from those states. On Dec. 29, Minot High will play Wayzata, Minn. and on Dec. 30, they face Hopkins, Minn. After their time in Minnesota, the Majettes will open the 2024 portion of their schedule inside the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Jan. 6, 2024 as part of the Pentagon Border Battle Challenge. Minot High faces St. Thomas More, from Rapid City, S.D., a team that qualified for the South Dakota Class A state tournament.

Starting at $2.99/week.
