BISMARCK — The Minot High School boys tennis team suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday evening on the road at Bismarck Legacy.

The Magicians (2-1 overall) and the Sabres (2-0) were tied at 3-3 after the single matches. Legacy won all three of the doubles matches to win the non-conference dual meet at 6-3.

“We got off to a good start today, splitting the six singles matches,” MHS head coach Scott DeLorme said. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to keep the same momentum going into doubles and Legacy used their experience to sweep all three.”

Minot’s three singles wins came from No. 3 Ridge Jaeger, No. 5 Aidan Diehl and No. 6 Colby Opp.

Jaeger dropped his first set before winning the next two to defeat Anthony Janes, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Diehl did the same against Jack Johnson for a three-set win by scores of 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Opp won his match convincingly over Gage Martell by only dropping one game, 6-1, 6-0.

The doubles portion narrowly went Legacy’s way. In the No. 1 match, Jay Moylan and Nick Mathern needed three sets to knock off Aidan and Zach Diehl.

The No. 2 doubles match went to Corby Svihovec and Johnson by scores of 7-5, 6-4. Janes and Martell wrapped up the doubles sweep with a scoreline of 6-2, 7-6 (8).

“Despite the loss, it was exactly the kind of match we needed,” DeLorme said. “We needed to be put into a competitive spot to see how we would respond. If we can use those lessons to get better in the next couple of weeks, this could be positive in many ways.”

The Magi return home for a match against Bismarck Century at 4:15 p.m. Thursday at Hammond Park.

Magi soccer settles for 2-2 draw after late Century comeback

BISMARCK — Clinging onto a 2-0 lead, the Minot High School boys soccer team watched another second-half lead evaporate in a flash.

Bismarck Century (1-0-2) scored two goals in 12 seconds to draw even with 13:25 remaining and ultimately forced a 2-2 tie against Minot (1-1-1, 1-1-1 WDA) at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.

The opening goal came on a counter-attack with Ezra Hagerott slipping the ball to Walter Markle running into the box. The quick shot caught goalkeeper Benjamin Cleary off-guard as the ball trickled past him on the ground and into the net.

The Magi doubled up roughly four minutes later. A free kick taken by Cameron Bolinske near the end line somehow found its way across the mouth of the goal to Hagerott, who stuck out his foot to notch the goal.

Century kept the pressure turned on in the second half and finally broke through on their own free kick with 13:37 remaining. Minot goalkeeper JJ Dufner looked helpless in a sea of bodies as the ball deflected in.

With momentum surging, Kenneth Brako unloaded a 30-yard strike and caught Dufner off his line a mere 12 seconds later. The long blast had the Patriots’ bench buzzing with excitement.

No one could find the game-winning goal in the final 10 minutes.

The Magi are back in action Thursday evening against Jamestown. Minot’s second road contest of the year is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
