MSU men’s basketball earns first win at Harding University Big Red Classic

SEARCY, Ark. — Hot shooting helped the Minot State men’s basketball team to a 78-65 victory over Harding University on Friday evening.

The Beavers (1-0) took down the Bisons (0-1) at the Harding University Big Red Classic after shooting 47% from the field. MSU senior guard Kyle Beisch led the Beavers with 21 points.

MSU also led two key categories — rebounding (37-27) and assists (18-6). Senior guard/forward Trevor Rothstein’s double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds) was a key factor in the victory.

Junior guard Max Cody tallied seven assists, one more than the Bisons recorded as a team. The Beavers shot 38% from behind the arc and converted all 10 of their free throw attempts.

The Big Red Classic will continue tomorrow, with MSU facing Ouachita Baptist University (1-0) at 2:30 p.m.

MSU women’s basketball drops opening-night contest to Southern Nazarene

BETHANY, Okla. — The Minot State women’s basketball team dropped its first official contest of the season by a score of 77-46 to Southern Nazarene on Friday night.

The Beavers (0-1) shot 14 of 45 from the field, making just 31% of their shots. The Crimson Storm (1-0) gained a lead through a three-point barrage, shooting 13 of 31 behind the arc.

Southern Nazarene outscored Minot State in every quarter. Three Crimson Storm scorers (Sonia Sarda, Jaycee Soap and Alexus Jones) finished the game in double figures.

MSU junior guard/forward Calli Delsman paced the Beavers with 11 points. Delsman also added a team-high nine rebounds.

Although the game featured six lead changes, it was never tied. The Beavers held a 34-28 rebounding advantage.

Minot State will face Texas Rio Grande Valley in an exhibition game today at 3 p.m. in Edinburg, Texas.

MSU soccer ends season with 2-1

loss at U-Mary

BISMARCK — The Minot State women’s soccer team held the lead for a little over two minutes before the Marauders battled back.

U-Mary (11-4-2, 9-4-2 NSIC) ended MSU’s season on a sour note Friday evening with a 2-1 victory in Bismarck. The Beavers wrapped up the year with a 3-15 (3-12 NSIC) record.

Melanie van Walstijn had the Beavers buzzing with the first goal in the 36th minute of the rivalry affair. Maureen Sullivan countered with the equalizer two minutes later for the Marauders.

The game-winning goal went to Emma Davies in the 49th minute.

U-Mary outshot MSU 12-7 (10-3 shots on target).

MSU senior goalkeeper Erin Rafferty made eight saves in her final collegiate showing. Also playing their last game for the program were seniors Gabriela Fonseca, Daniela Fonseca, Chloe Van Bart, Autumne Haskell and Jasmine Basuil.

Minotauros drop first of two-game series with Aberdeen

ABERDEEN, S.D. — With the score tied at 3-3 after two periods, the Aberdeen Wings made their move on the Minot Minotauros.

The Minotauros (8-4-3) dropped a 6-3 contest to the Wings (8-2-5) in Aberdeen on Friday night. Although the game started off well for Minot, Aberdeen stayed in the fight.

Minot’s Joseph Harguindeguy (1:47) and Jay Buchholz (18:06) scored the first two goals of the night. Bucholz assisted on Harguindeguy’s goal, while Cade Stibbe provided the assist to Bucholz.

Cade Neilson (18:42) and Jake Beaune (19:58) each scored for Aberdeen in the frame, applying pressure to the Minotauros. Neilson’s goal was unassisted, while Beaune’s goal came on a power play.

Kyler Kleven scored an unassisted goal at the 8:02 mark in the second period, but that score gave the Minotauros their last lead. Aberdeen’s Clayton Consentino (12:51) received an assist from Bryce Kallen, knotting the game at 3-3.

Hutson Karpman (2:05), Riley Murphy (4:04) and Jack Powell (5:33) all found the back of the net early in the third period. The goals effectively iced the game for the Wings.

The Minotauros will play the Wings again at 7:15 p.m. tonight in Aberdeen.
