Prep Baseball: Sentinels sweep Watford City, grow winning streak to 4
It required a bit of late-game heroics in the opener, but the Minot High baseball team secured a doubleheader sweep of Watford City on Tuesday, May 5.
The Sentinels found themselves trailing by two runs entering the top of the sixth inning before rallying for a pair of runs in each of the final two frames to complete a 4-2 comeback victory in Game 1. No such comeback effort was needed in the nightcap, as the Sentinels matched their scoring output from the opener in the first inning en route to a 13-1 victory to complete the sweep.
The Wolves took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener. Brandon Spacher got Watford City on the board with an RBI single to right, plating Carter Branstrom. Erin Luna stole home during the next at-bat for Watford City’s only runs of the contest.
The Sentinels (12-6 overall, 10-6 WDA) left six runners on base through the first five innings before breaking through in the sixth. With two outs and the bases empty, Minot North drew a pair of walks and Jace Price singled to load the bases. Garrett Nikitenko tied the game with a two-run double, scoring Brady Vigested and Logan Dixon.
Levi Balas gave Minot North the lead in the seventh on a two-RBI double to right, bringing home Mason Stewart and Gannon Hedberg. Minot North finished with seven hits.
Kayden Danielson pitched all seven innings to pick up the win for the Sentinels. He allowed two runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking six. He tossed 109 pitches.
The nightcap was a bit less stressful for Minot North, which grabbed a 4-0 lead after the first inning. Brody Mueller got the offense going with an RBI double to left to score Stewart. Mueller would steal home later in the inning. A Watford City error at third plated another and Price scored on a wild pitch. The Wolves (1-18, 1-17) committed three errors in the game.
McGhee, Mueller and Stewart finished with multi-hit games. Mueller finished 3-for-4 with a triple, double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Stewart doubled twice and had an RBI and scored three times.
Stewart pitched five innings, allowing one run on five hits, striking out three and walking two.
The Sentinels travel to play Bismarck St. Mary’s on Thursday, May 7, for a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m.
