Minot High basketball notebook: Racking up W’s

The Minot High School boys basketball team hasn’t lost a game in 330 days.

Dating back to last season, the Magi are currently on a 16-game winning streak and that includes Minot’s postseason run to capture the program’s second consecutive state championship.

The last time the Magi tasted defeat was on Feb. 1, 2016, to Century at home (63-61). At that time, Peyton Manning, Cam Newton and Coldplay were preparing for Super Bowl 50.

How long can the winning streak last? Until a new Super Bowl champion is crowned? Possibly, but it won’t be easy.

The No. 1-ranked Magi have started their 2016-17 campaign strong with a 5-0 overall record and are 3-0 in Western Dakota Association conference games.

Minot’s most notable victory this season came on the road against Century in overtime, 76-71, on Dec. 16.

The Magi are the only undefeated team left standing in the West Region. Although, Bismarck Legacy is also a perfect 3-0 in WDA contests and, in the East, Fargo Davies (5-0, 2-0 in the region) and West Fargo (4-1, 4-0 in the region) are off to strong starts as well.

To reach a full calendar year without a loss, Minot needs to win their next 11 games (and that’s not set in stone either because the weather could get involved). During that 11-game span, they will play everybody in the West Region at least once.

Meaning the Magi will get their first look at Legacy (on Jan. 17) and a highly anticipated rematch against Century (on Jan. 31), which is currently marked as game No. 11 on the quest to go a full year without losing.

Both of those games against the Bismarck area school are scheduled to be played at Minot High School.

Putting up the points

In the Magi’s five wins this season, they have had a different leading scorer on four occasions. Against Grand Forks Red River and Bismarck St. Mary’s in the first two games of the season, they had five players scored in double figures in each contest.

Four players are currently averaging double-digits: Senior Justin Engg (16.2 points per game), senior KyJuan Johnson (15.7 points in three games), junior Peyton Lamoureux (12.2) and sophomore Alex Schimke (10.2).

In West Region games, the Magi are averaging 77 points per contest and are knocking down 3-pointers at a 43 percent clip – best in the conference in both categories.

When Minot scores 64 points or more they are 29-0 since the start of the last season. When they don’t reach the 64-point plateau, they are 1-2. Two losses against Century and a 57-47 win over Williston on Dec. 11, 2015.

Turnovers plaguing the Majettes

The Minot High School girls basketball team has been on the other side of the spectrum. The Majettes are off to a 1-4 start, 1-1 in the WDA, and are searching for wins instead of compiling them.

They have been without their senior guard Evie Reynolds, who was the team’s second leading scorer from a season ago, due to an injured finger. The impact has been noticeable.

The Majettes have struggled with breaking down press defenses and, in general, keeping a hold of the ball. They are averaging 28.6 turnovers per game, nearly double the turnovers they averaged a season ago (14.9).

That said, they will get a good opportunity to get things turned around here shortly.

The Majettes take on two teams still winless in the conference (Williston and Jamestown) after they travel to Bismarck Century (4-1, 2-0 WDA) Thursday. They get Williston (0-3, 0-3 WDA) at home Friday and then a road contest at Jamestown (1-4, 0-4 WDA) on Jan. 3.
