Prep Baseball: Magicians’ offense erupts for 38 runs in sweep of Watford City

The weather was hot and so were the bats for the Minot High baseball team during its doubleheader sweep of Watford City on Wednesday, April 22.

The Magicians amassed 38 runs and collected 30 hits, as they took Game 1 by putting up a season-high 27 runs in a 27-1 victory. They completed the sweep with an 11-9 win in the finale.

Minot High (8-4 overall, 7-3 WDA) scored a run in all four of its plate appearances in the opener, scoring 13 in the third. The Magicians plated one run in the second, before scoring eight in the second and finishing with five in the fourth.

Owen Meyer tripled, doubled and finished 3-for-4 with eight RBIs and four runs scored. Remington Anderson and Cole Deaver also registered extra-base hits. Anderson, Oliver Deschamp and Cade Erhart all tallied three RBIs. Anderson was a perfect 4-for-4 with five runs scored.

Gavin King and Evan Racine split time on the mound for Minot High. King got the start and the win, throwing the first three innings. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out two. Racine pitched the final two frames, allowing three hits and striking out one.

The finale was much closer, as the Wolves (1-12, 1-11) nearly pulled off a late comeback with six runs over the fifth and sixth innings. The Magicians again jumped out to an early lead, scoring two in the first, five in the second and three more in the third. They led 10-3 after four.

Watford City struck for four runs in the fifth. Brandon Spacher delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded and the Wolves followed with two more to get within 10-7. Minot High scratched across a run in the bottom half of the inning on a wild pitch.

Spacher added a two-run double in the sixth to close to within two runs of the lead, but the Magicians turned a double play in the seventh and Anderson struck out Rylen Petersen to end the game.

Nine of the 10 batters for Minot High recorded a hit in Game 2. Anderson went 3-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and three runs scored. Brock Thompson had a double and three hits total, driving in three runs. Owen Sundahl doubled, plated a run and scored once himself.

Spacher finished with a game-high six RBIs for the Wolves. Erin Luna was 4-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored.

Minot High’s games against Jamestown and West Fargo Horace on Friday, April 24, were postponed due to weather. The Magicians host Mandan for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 28, at Corbett Field beginning at 4:30 p.m.
