Project Tundra receives federal energy funds

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Energy has announced an award of $4.2 million to Project Tundra, according to news releases from U.S. Sens. John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer, both R-ND. This is the first installment of up to $350 million to Project Tundra.

These funds will be distributed through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Carbon Capture Demonstration Projects Program, which supports the development of community-informed integrated carbon capture, transport and storage projects.

“This project demonstrates our state’s ingenuity and decades of energy development, experience, and dominance. Obviously, more work lies ahead, but this is really welcome progress,” Cramer said in the release.

Project Tundra will capture up to 4 million metric tons of CO2 annually from the Milton R. Young Station, a lignite coal-based power plant. The CO2 would then be stored in geologic formations, roughly a mile underground. The facility’s commercial operation is set to begin in 2028.

Starting at $2.99/week.
