Two ND properties listed in National Register of Historic Places

BISMARCK – A church and a bank have been listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The National Register of Historic Places is the federal government’s list of properties it considers worthy of preservation and recognition. North Dakota nominations are coordinated by the State Historical Society of North Dakota.

The Icelandic Evangelical Lutheran Church, also known as the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church of St. John, in Pembina is significant for its representation of two distinct ethnic Christian groups who are not widely represented in other regions of the United States, a community formerly known as South Pembina, and a unique combination of architecture to represent both ethnic groups.

Forest River State Bank on Front Street in Forest River, Walsh County, is significant for its architecture and construction. An excellent example of Prairie Style architecture, it exemplifies early 20th-century small town bank architecture in North Dakota and the upper Midwest. The Forest River State Bank also is a notable example of a commercial institution vital to the economic development of many small towns in North Dakota in the early 1900s.
