WHITE SHIELD – The White Shield community observes Memorial Day on May 30.

This date represents the original Memorial Day, first observed nationally in 1868.

Veterans go to about 12 cemeteries and salute graves. The chaplain says a prayer, then a 21-gun salute

and repeat is conducted, ending at the Old Scouts Cemetery at White Shield.

Unfortunately this year, a veteran, a former Marine from Fox Company, fell ill at the Old Scouts Cemetery observance but the color guard jumped into action, a registered nurse stepped in to stabilize, 911 was called, a wind break was formed around the Marine and soon the White Shield ambulance arrived to take over.

The Memorial Day observance then continued with a program and meal at the Old Scouts Veterans Building in White Shield.

Starting at $2.99/week.
