The Market on 4th
Whether it be newly created or cleverly repurposed, unique home decor items are being made and sold by local artisans at The Market on 4th.
Even the building itself has been repurposed as The Market on 4th is located in the former Daddy-O Drive-in, a hotspot hangout that was huge back in the 1950s and ’60s. Found at 1900 4th Ave. NW, The Market on 4th is now home to nearly 10 businesses engaged in niche markets.
“We try to make it feel more like a store than a crafters mall or an event like a flea market,” owner Rachael Walz said. “So we do mix it up a little bit.”
Besides owning and managing the market, Walz also operates her own business there, called Tattered Treasures.
An example of mixing it up a bit is that a bride looking for handmade wedding invitations, a person looking to have a dresser refinished or someone who likes to browse for knickknacks might all converge on the market and walk away a satisfied customer. Some of the products that go out the door are custom-made for clients.
“She can transfer images to fabric, to wood to anything you can imagine and get a consistent image each time,”” Walz said of a woman who operates a screen printing business there.
“We also have a gal who does baby accessories, like hair bows and bow ties and little outfits things like that,” she said.
Those artisans, who Walz has selected to do business out of the market, also agree to contribute 10 hours a month to staffing the store.
The market is not open every day, though.
“Because everything is hand made, upcycled or found by our makers, we need down time to recreate,” Walz said. So they’re only open the second and fourth weekend of every month Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. They’ve been at it since the second weekend in December, and Walz said they have had a great response, in part because of their diversity and quality.
“I have a good variety,” she said of her sellers and makers. “I feel I have the best of the best in the community.”
