Fargo Davies rolls past Magi hockey in state first round

FARGO — Hopes of winning the program’s third state championship were dashed pretty quickly Thursday for the Minot High School boys hockey team.

Fargo Davies (17-8-0) was relentless with five first-period goals en route to a 8-3 victory over the Magicians (12-12-0) in the first round of the NDHSAA boys hockey State Tournament.

The Eagles put the pressure on early with a goal by Aidan Potas 53 seconds into the contest. A couple minutes later, Austin Schmidt blasted a puck past MHS goaltender Tre’ Sortland to make it 2-0.

Cade Stibbe used his blazing speed and quick hands to split Minot’s defense for a third Fargo Davies goal a little under seven minutes into the game. Stibbe broke free three minutes later and dished off an assist to Schmidt for his second goal.

Cade Hanson slid in a rebound goal to cap the five-goal first period for the Eagles.

The Magi finally had a bounce go their way with 26 seconds left in the first period. Sophomore Ashton Hillman centered the puck from behind the net and directed it off a Fargo Davies’ defender for Minot’s opening goal.

Potas completed a hat trick with both of Fargo Davies’ goals in the second period, 7-1.

A running clock and three more goals came in the third period. Tyler Corbid slotted in No. 8 for Fargo Davies, while Minot freshman Jayden Luck crashed the net for his third goal this season and senior Kyler Stenburg scored with 19 seconds left to push the final score to 8-3.

Fargo Davies advances to the state semifinals where its reward is a rematch against Bismarck Century. The Patriots won that state semifinal contest last season, 6-2.

The Magi drop to other side of the bracket to face Grand Forks Red River at roughly 1:15 p.m. this evening at the Farmers Union Insurance rink in Fargo.
