Beavers outlast St. Cloud State in home finale

Sean Arbaut/MSU Minot State pitcher Jonah Prokott delivers a pitch to start the game Sunday against Saint Cloud State. Prokott allowed three hits in seven innings, as the Beavers beat the Huskies 5-3.

Ricky Apondace hit an RBI double and a triple as the Minot State Beavers baseball team outlasted the St. Cloud State Huskies 5-3 on Sunday at Corbett Field.

Minot State scored two runs in the first inning, before St. Cloud answered right back in the top of the second to tie the game at 2-2 .

That’s where the score stood until Brian Perry hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Seugjun Song to give the Beavers the 3-2 lead in the fourth inning. The Beavers added two more runs in the fifth inning. Mark Ossanna scored on an error by Huskies’ left fielder Archer Ogbourne while fielding a single by Grant Gabbert. Gabbert came around to score two batters later when Song hit an RBI single to left field.

The Huskies did their best to rally in the top of the ninth inning when Sawyer Smith scored on a Ben Clapp single to pull St. Cloud State within two runs. However, a fielder’s choice ended the game.

Minot State starter Jonah Prokott (4-1) picked up the win, allowing two runs on three hits in seven innings of work. Prokott had one walk and struck out two. Conner Meldrim earned his first save of the year, allowing one run on two hits in the top of the ninth. Noah Balandran also pitched one no-hit inning of middle relief for the Beavers, walking one and striking out two.

Jack Habeck (6-3) took the loss for St. Cloud State, allowing five runs, four earned, on 12 hits in five innings. Cooper Avery pitched three shutout innings of relief for the Huskies.

St. Cloud State drops to 27-12 overall and 23-11 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) with the loss.

The win improves Minot State’s record to 15-29 overall and 12-22 in the NSIC. The Beavers travel to Bemidji State for a double header on Tuesday, April 30, before closing the regular season out this coming weekend with a triple header at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, S.D.
