Airmen outreach

Col. James Gallagher, commander of the 5th Mission Support Group at Minot Air Force Base, shown in his office Wednesday, is seeking ways to improve the quality of life for 18- to 24-year-old airmen at the Minot base and give them a good experience during their time at the Minot base. That age group makes up the largest segment of the base population.
MINOT AIR FORCE BASE Col. James Gallagher, commander of the 5th Mission Support Group at Minot Air Force Base, is looking for ways to get young airmen more active in the Minot community and area communities.
To give airmen at Minot AFB, particularly those ages 18 to 24 years, a quality experience while here, Gallagher hopes the Minot community and surrounding communities can help. The 18- to 24-year-olds make up the largest segment of the base population.
Minot AFB has a population pushing 12,000 people, Gallagher said.

FOX's 'Sons of Tucson' far too farcical, but funWed, March 17, 2010 @ 7:02PM There’s no way to start a show as ridiculous as “Sons of Tucson” than to just start it. Brandon, Gary and Robbie Gunderson are three boys whose banker father managed sole custody from their entirely absent mom, but failed to make any arrangements for them when he went to prison for 25 years on fraud charges. In order to enroll at school -- always a priority for three boys -- they plan to hire some guy to stand in as their dad. Their requirements aren’t terribly demanding: male, over 30 and breathing. But despite going to the trouble of getting themselves enrolled in school, they want to maintain their freedom, of course, so no one who will get too involved. The reason they didn’t just put themselves on Craig’s list was to avoid the inevitable footrace between pedophiles and social workers, who they fear would split them up.

Queen Victoria isn't very nice in Stephanie Barron's latest mysteryWed, March 17, 2010 @ 6:55PM What if Queen Victoria was ... well, darker than we think she was? That's the premise of "A Flaw in the Blood" by Stephanie Barron, a book that held me riveted for a few hours over the weekend. The mystery is set immediately after the death of Queen Victoria's consort, Prince Albert. A fictitious Irish barrister, Patrick Fitzgerald, is on the run from a German count in the employ of the queen. She fears he will dig up a secret that could threaten her family's claim to the throne. Queen Victoria, as most royal buffs know, passed along a gene mutation that meant her son and several of her grandsons and great-grandsons died of hemophilia. Their blood didn't clot properly. The disease in the heirs to the thrones of Russia and Spain threatened the stability of those countries and may have contributed to revolution. Prior to the birth of Queen Victoria, no member of the family had ever had hemophilia. Or at least that's what we were meant to think, Barron writes.
