Lake Sakakawea level at 10-year high
Kim Fundingsland/MDN •
More water in 2009 means more room to play at Lake Sakakawea. These youngsters are enjoying some cool fun in a bay that had that had been dry for several years.
RIVERDALE — The steady and rapid rise of Lake Sakakawea got another boost this week. The latest outlook provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contains more inflow into the Missouri River system than was forecast a month ago.
After almost 10 years of dropping water levels, it appears that the recovery of water in Lake Sakakawea is a reality. The level of Lake Sakakawea on Thursday was 1,839.1 feet, 20 feet higher than at the same time in 2008. Triggered by heavy winter snows in Montana, the inflow continues to run much higher than the long term average.

‘Merlin’ somewhat less than magicalWed, July 1, 2009 @ 6:28PM The cast of characters is familiar. Their roles are not. And magic has little to do with it. Despite several reinterpretations, modern-age revivals, animated features and some serious liberties over the years (including randomly bursting into song), the latest, “Merlin,” NBC’s Sunday night serio-comic reimagination of life in Camelot, has some power still to surprise. We meet Colin Morgan as the title character himself, for instance, as a teenager. He has extraordinary gifts of magic -- outlawed in the realm -- and is sent by his mother to apprentice with Gaius, Camelot’s apothecary, physician royal and scientist. Merlin manages to save Gaius’ life and that of the teenaged bully and heir to the throne, Prince Arthur, through his use of magic.

Live from WDAFri, March 6, 2009 @ 8:12PM I'm sitting here on press row at the West Region Basketball Tournament, when my friend Paul Mellum, who is officiating some of the action this weekend, walked up to me. "What's up with your blog?" he asked. "I click on there and it's like Feb 16th (the last time you updated it)." I admit to not being the most regular blogger, but here's a few nuggets from the West Region while Minot High and Williston warm up before their big semifinal tilt. On the boys side, Mandan is the team to beat. The Braves looked outstanding in pounding Dickinson and super-soph Joe Hanstad. Whoever wins between the Magi and Coyotes will be very competitive with Mandan, but the Braves are the team to beat. Bismarck High found itself in a rare spot today, in a loser-out game in the West Region.

Long time no blogSun, June 14, 2009 @ 10:03PM Wow, has it really been a month since I complained about the economy. Time flies when you are being lied to. Oh, wait, that's an old blog. Still, I believe it is time to say the downturn is over. All you have to do is say it and it will be true. Like three wishes from a genie. By the way, when you say that, could you also through in a bit on the bad housing market in Minot. I guess we missed the rest of the nation's problems on that one as well. Yeah, booming here, crap everywhere else means my wages get frozen, but cost of the house I want to buy goes up. Nice. Here is what I really want to talk about. I guess the Dakota Athletic Conference is taking its respective ball and going home. The DAC athletic directors voted to make that recommendation to the board of directors and freeze Minot State out of the post season and the post season awards.
