Lakers beat Burros and lose to Patriots

The Des Lacs-Burlington (11-2) bats were alive in game one and gone in game two as the Lakers split with Hillsboro-Central Valley (3-5) and Mayville-Portland-Clifford-Galesburg (6-0) at the Scheels Complex on Saturday, April 27, in Minot.

The Lakers used heavy hitting in the second and sixth innings for six runs of the seven for the win over the Burros.

After a scoreless first inning, a single, stolen base and a wild pitch at the top of the second gave Hillsboro a runner on third. One more wild pitch and the runner on third scored to give the Burros a 1-0 lead.

The bottom of the second was a batters zone for hits by the Lakers. Senior Zannah Bjerklie singled to start off. Senior Shaylie Holen tripled to score Bjerklie. Senior Mya Neshem then singled. Two outs later, sophomore Elyssa Lindahl tripled to score Neshem. Sophomore Logen Ystaas then tripled to score Lindahl. Score after two innings, 4-1 for Des Lacs-Burlington.

After holding the Burros scoreless at the top of the third, the Lakers at the bottom of the inning added another run when freshman Sierra Yale singled to reach base and advanced on a single by Bjerklie. Holen then singled and Yale scored, giving Des Lacs-Burlington the 5-1 lead.

Hillsboro would get two runs at the top of the fifth to narrow the gap to 5-3 for the Lakers.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Ystaas led off with a single that advanced her to second base on an error. Senior Cambray Benno singled and advanced to second base on an error as well. Ystaas scored on the same error. Yale then singled. Bjerklie reached first on an error in the field that also scored Benno. The score at the end of the sixth game Des Lacs-Burlington 7-3 lead going into the final inning.

The Burros scored one run on an error after two outs but fell short in the end. Hillsboro had six errors in the game while Des Lacs-Burlington had three errors.

The Lakers were 13 of 33 at the plate and Yale was 3 of 4 while Ystaas, Holen, Bjerklie, and Neshem each had two hits and a combined four RBIs for the game. Lindahl and Benno each added a hit and scored in the win. Eighth grader Piper Feller pitched seven innings and allowed four runs on four hits with one run in the earned run category.

In one of the two evening games, the Patriots were able to keep the bats moving while the Lakers had used up the hits in the previous game.

The first three and a half innings were scoreless until a single and a double scored a run for the Patriots. At the bottom of the fifth inning, an error followed by singles put runners in scoring position for Mayville. A sacrifice bunt scores runs. In the bottom of the sixth inning, a pair of walks and an error combined with a single added to the run count, giving the Patriots the 6-0 margin for the win.

Des Lacs-Burlington was just 1 of 21 at the plate.

Yale pitched seven innings, allowing six runs, three earned, on seven hits, while walking three striking out ten.
