MSU’s Augustin crushes school record, hits NCAA qualifying mark
AZUSA, Calif. – It was a day to remember for Minot State long jumper Brayan Augustin, one that will be written in the Beaver record books.
Augustin uncorked a leap of 24 feet, 5.75 inches at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific, finishing 3rd in the long jump with a new all-time Minot State school record and an NCAA national qualifying mark.
A career-best effort for the sophomore, who also is a defensive back for the Minot State football team, Augustin broke the 38-year-old school record of 24 feet, 0.75 inches set by Adam Samuels in 1978. Augustin’s jump currently ranks tied for 20th in the nation.
The Beavers got a few other big performances Saturday as they wrapped up competition in California, as Ethan Graham finished 9th in the shot put with a season-best throw of 48- feet, 10 inches.
And Minot State’s middle-distance runners, Peyton Tuhy and Bailey Wride, each turned in strong efforts in power-packed fields, climbing the NSIC standings with their performances.
Tuhy clocked a time of 4 minutes, 1.66 seconds in the men’s 1,500 meters, less than a half second off his career-best time in the event. His effort Saturday is currently the 8th-best time in the event in the NSIC.
Wride also was a half-second off her career-best in the women’s 1,500 meters, running a time of 4:42.92, which currently is 4th fastest in the NSIC.
The Minot State men’s and women’s track and field teams return to action with a final regular-season meet on Wednesday, April 29, competing in Bismarck at the Marauders/Mystics Tune-Up.
