Vistas go .500 at ‘The Pete’ Invitational

The Minot Vistas opened with a win, closed with a win and had two losses sandwiched in between, finishing 2-2 at the Jim Pettersen Fargo-Moorhead Invitational – also known as “The Pete – over the weekend in Fargo.

The tournament featured 12 teams split into three groups of four, each playing one another in a three-team pool play. The top four teams advanced to Sunday’s semifinal, while the other eight played a consolation game. Teams from North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Nebraska were represented.

The Vistas placed third in their pool, finishing 1-2. They opened pool play with a 4-3 victory over Brainerd (Minn.) on Friday, June 26, before dropping back to back games on Saturday. They fell 10-5 to Sr. Bloomington Post 550 (Minn.) and 10-7 to Fargo Post 2, dropping them into a consolation game on Sunday. The Vistas won that consolation match, 13-0, against Dassel Cokato (Minn.) in five innings.

On Friday, Minot scored the eventual game-winning run in the fifth inning off a passed ball to break a 3-3 tie with Brainerd. Oliver Deschamp finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Kayden Danielson earned the win on the mound, tossing the opening 4 1/3 innings. He allowed three runs on four hits, striking out two. TJ Hjelmstad pitched a perfect 2 2/3 innings in relief, striking out three.

Brody Mueller and Remington Anderson both homered for the Vistas against Bloomington Post on Saturday, but the opposition plated the final six runs of the game to come away with the victory. Anderson also doubled, driving in two runs and scoring once.

Brenden Lucas went 4-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored for Post 550. Kyle Fortner and Jack Latourelle each had two RBIs and two runs scored.

Against tournament-host Fargo Post 2 later in the day, the Vistas led 7-4 entering the bottom of the sixth before Fargo Post 2 put up six to take its first lead of the game. Ben Sheets broke a 7-7 tie with a three-run home run to left field. Sheets finished 2-for-3 with six RBIs and two runs scored.

Gavin King went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored and Danielson finished 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Anderson drove in a team-best three runs.

The Vistas (15-10) finished strong, shutting out Dassel Cokato in their consolation game. The Vistas recorded 14 hits and scored five runs in both the first and third innings, and three more in the second.

Drew Jordan was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored. Oliver Deschamp doubled twice and recorded four RBIs and three runs scored. Landyn McGhee also doubled twice and drove in four. Anderson homered for the second time in the tournament and Brody Mueller scored three times and doubled. Minot finished with five extra-base hits. .

Hjelmstad tossed a complete-game one-hitter, striking out four and walking one.

Fargo Post 2 won the tournament, beating St. Michael Mikes Post 567, 8-0, in the semifinals and defeating the Bismarck Governors, 6-2, in the championship game.

The Vistas host Fargo Post 2 for a doubleheader on Tuesday, June 30, at Corbett Field beginning at 3 p.m.
