Local Minot athletes do well in jumps and throws at track and field events

Despite the return of winter weather, local high school track and field teams have worked on attending events when and where feasible. The Carrington Sports Booster varsity meet was canceled on Tuesday, but the Shannon Gangl Memorial Track and Field meet was held, Friday, April 12, at the Starion Sports Complex in Mandan.

On the boys side, Minot North junior John Williams III claimed top honors in both the long jump and triple jump at the event with leaps of 22-2 and 45-6 respectively. Williams claimed the state championship in the triple jump last year with a leap of 45-5 as a sophomore.

Minot High senior Logan Conklin finished in first place in the high jump clearing 6-4 in the event. Conklin cleared the same height in last year’s state meet for second place as a junior. Fellow Magi senior Jacob Roth took first in the pole vault clearing 12-6 at the event. Roth cleared 11-6 at the 2023 state meet for 17th place, and the 12-6 mark would have been good enough to tie 11th place at state last season.

Minot High junior Vincent Pecoranro won the 100-meter sprint with a time of 11.26 while Minot North junior was fourth with a time of 11.45 for the event. In the 800-meter, junior Magi Benjamin Harris was in first place with a time of 1:59.08 in the race.

Minot High earned a top finish in the 4×800 relay. The team of juniors Harris, Jacob Jackson, Nathan Wistisen and Cooper Fjeld posted an 8:19.03 time that was nearly 16 seconds faster than the second place mark by Williston and 37 seconds ahead of third place Century.

Minot High senior Kobe Irmen placed second in the discus with a throw of 150-0 at the event. Irmen placed 10th at the 2023 state meet with a throw of 136-8 as a junior. Irmen also placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 47-2 and eighth in the javelin with a 147-0 mark.

Minot High senior Harrison Stewert finished second in the 400 with a 52.53 time while Minot North junior Nolan Howey was second in the 3200 run with a 10:27.42 time. Minot High senior Jobe Rystedt was fourth in the shot put with a 49-6 mark while Magi junior Lincoln Brooks was fifth with a 48-0 throw.

For the girls, Minot High freshman Sophia Lade was first in the 1600 run with a 5:30.79 time and second in the 800 final with a 2:30.6 time at the event. The 4×100 relay team of sophomores Monica Boakye and Kadyn Braun with seniors Makayla WHitfield and Maicee Burke finished first with a 50.69 time. Burke was also third in the 100 sprint at 13.15 while Boakye was fifth in the same race with a 13.18 mark.

Majettes eighth grader Lucy Harris finished in second place for the 3200 run with a 12:00.47 mark, less than two seconds behind the winner from Williston. Minot North eighth grader Alyviah Kopp was fourth in the 1600 run with a 5:58.71 and eighth in the 800 run as well.

Minot High senior Sylvia Cowper finished second in the pole vault with an 8-3 mark while junior Majettes Haleigh Carr was second in the triple jump with a 35-6 leap. Fellow Minot High junior Haley Conklin was third in the triple jump at 34-10 and sixth in the long jump at 15-10 mark.

Participating at the Gangl Memorial were Century, Hazen, Jamestown, Mandan, Watford City, Williston, Minot North and Minot High. Century posted the top score in both boy’s and girl’s team scores. For the girls, Century tallied 229 points with Minot High in second at 122.66 and Jamestown in third at 110 points. For the boys, Century had 213.5 for first place, Minot High had 151 points for second and Mandan tallied 98.5 points for third place.

The next meets for Minot High will be the Sidney Eagles Invite as well as the Fargo Elite scheduled for Saturday, April 20, in Stdney Montana and Fargo respectively. The BPS track and field invite rescheduled from Thursday and Friday, April 18-19, is at Bismarck State College.

For Minot North, the Glee Mayer Invitational is scheduled for Monday at Duane Carlson stadium in Minot.
