Prep Softball: Local athletes highlight Class B all-state team

Several local athletes earned all-state honors for their production on the softball diamond this season, including representatives from Renville County, Velva/Drake-Anamoose, Beulah, Des Lacs-Burlington/Lewis & Clark and Glenburn.

The Class B all-state team, voted on by the North Dakota High School Coaches Association (NDHSCA), featured 24 athletes from 13 teams. Gracing the list were 13 seniors, eight juniors and three sophomores.

Beulah’s Addie Dale-Geiger was named the NDHSCA POWERade Outstanding Senior Athlete. She batted .637 with a 1.337 slugging percentage, leading the Miners in home runs (12), doubles (12), RBIs (51) and runs scored (41). In the circle, she tossed 125 2/3 innings, going 12-2 with 221 strikeouts and a 3.57 ERA. Dale-Greiger was joined on the all-state team by teammates Cassie Christensen and Ellie Weidner. Beulah finished third at the state tournament.

DLB/L&C had two athletes named all-state in Logen Ystaas and Piper Feller. Feller led the Lakers with a .600 batting average, recording 26 extra-base hits – 14 doubles, six triples and six home runs – 27 RBIs, and 44 runs scored. Ystaas hit .500 with 10 doubles, four triples and four home runs, driving in 29 runs and scoring 33 times. Feller also pitched 88 1/3 innings, going 10-4 with a 1.82 ERA. The Lakers finished sixth at the state tournament.

Also placing two names on the team was Renville County with Taya Aufforth and Marleigh Henry. Aufforth sported a .448 batting average with 30 total hits, including six home runs. She recorded 36 RBIs and 32 runs scored. Henry finished right behind her teammate with a .439 average with 24 RBIs and 33 runs scored.

Grace Balas got the nod for Velva/Drake-Anamoose, as the Raiders took fourth at the state tournament. Balas batted .519 with nine doubles, seven triples, four home runs, 25 RBIs and 34 runs scored. In the circle, she tossed the majority of her team’s total innings with 104 1/3. She won 13 games, struck out 202 batters and owned a 2.28 ERA.

Emma Jones helped guide Glenburn to both its first state tournament appearance as well as its first state tournament victory. Jones led the Panthers in batting average (.554), hits (46), doubles (11), triples (6) and runs scored (42). She was second in home runs (7) and RBIs (30).

State champion Central Cass had four athletes on the list and runner-up Kindred-Richland placed three. Thompson also had three representatives. Ray, Harvey/Wells County, Carrington, Nelson County/Midkota and Wilton-Wing all had one athlete on the team.

Central Cass’ Scott Kost was named the NDHSCA SUBWAY Coach of the Year.
