Beavers drop exhibition game to Winnipeg

Sean Arbaut Minot State’s Brooklyn Casey brings the ball upfield Tuesday in the Beavers’ exhibition game against visiting Winnipeg. Winnipeg scored in the final 2 minutes for a 1-0 win.

The Minot State women’s soccer team hit the turf at First Western Bank Field at Herb Parker Stadium for some friendly exhibition action in a tune-up for the upcoming season.

The Beavers hosted the University of Winnipeg on a sunny, sweltering Tuesday afternoon in an 80-minute exhibition that the Wesmen won 1-0 as the visitors scored a late goal for the victory.

The game provided a competitive welcome to several new faces for Minot State as the team arrived on campus this past weekend, did fitness testing on Monday, and officially begins practice for the fall season tomorrow.

“It’s our second day and so to see our competitiveness, to see our efforts, that’s the big starting point that we need to see, and I think that’s what they showed,” Minot State second-year coach TJ Perez said.

Maddie Elliott led the way defensively with six saves in goal on the day, while Morgen Fried had three shots to lead the offense.

The Beavers now get a week-and-a-half off practice and prepare for their next exhibition on Saturday, August 26, when they host the Magic City Legends at 5 p.m.

Minot State officially opens the season on the road Sunday, Sept. 3, playing a non-conference game at NSIC foe Minnesota Crookston.
