MSU track tunes up for NSIC Championships at DSU Last Chance Meet

The Minot State University track and field team competed in its final regular-season meet at Dickinson State in the Last Chance Meet on Thursday.

Amber Stevahn once again competed in the women’s high jump and took home first place with a D-II program-record 1.58 meter marking in the event which bested her own marking of 1.53 that she set a couple of weeks ago at the Northern State Open.

The women’s throws team had particularly strong competition with Breanna Johns-Oster earning first place with a shot put throw of 12.16. Just missing out on the podium was Samantha Brunelle with her fourth-place finish after a throw of 11.46. Chloe Gunderson finished sixth with a throw of 11.38 and Fadzai Madavo recorded the 10th-farthest throw of 9.73.

Gunderson also finished second in the women’s discus with a toss of 37.34 and Sophia Kenyon posted a sixth-place finish in the same event with a throw of 30.87.

Johns-Oster continued her solid meet with a second-place finish in the women’s hammer throw after delivering an impressive mark of 43.64. The Beavers finished with three in the top-five of the hammer finals as Peyton Lammerding recorded a throw of 42.86 and Tori Nygard continues to shine late in the season with a fifth-place finish (42.18). Sophia Kenyon threw the sixth-farthest throw of 38.78 and Brunelle recorded the 10th-farthest throw of 34.51 as the Beavers split the top-10 with five finishers.

Nygard finished sixth in the women’s javelin with a throw of 33.52 and Danielle Stauffer closed her day in eighth place with a throw of 31.74. On the track with the women’s team, Abby McGee finished fifth in the 1500 meter finals with a run of 5:00.06 and Alicia Murillo was just behind her in sixth place with a time of 5:00.38.

Ashley Miller placed second in the women’s 200-meter finals with a time of 26.69 and Stevahn placed third with a time of 27.08 to grab two podium spots. Meanwhile, Fadzai Madavo posted a fourth-place finish with a time of 14:30 in the 100-meter finals.

Emily Hansen posted the eighth-fastest time in the 800 finals and McGee finished 10th (2:37.43) along with Monica Okopal finishing in 11th (2:38.48).

Men’s track: Green places third in 200 meter finals; second in 400

On the men’s side for the Beavers, Joseph Green continues to solidify his standing in the NSIC Championship picture with a third-place finish in the 200 (21.91). Chase Doty finished 10th (22.91) and Connor Bishop was 13th (24.52) in the same event.

In the 400, Green recorded the second-fastest time of 50.38 and Vincente Guereca finished fourth with a time of 55.89.

Trestin Mancillas-Finnerty finished third in the 800 with a time of (1:59.39). Jacob Jensen was fourth with a time of 2:00.39, Juan Gutierrez finished 5th with a time of 2:01.91, Marco Murillo was sixth (2:03.16), and Christian Bird Hat was 11th (2:22.30).

Tito Gonzalez finished third in the men’s 5000 meters finals with a time of 16:06.98. Grayson Bonilla wasn’t far behind with a sixth-place finish and a time of 16:25.66. Meanwhile, Ryan Kohler was eighth (16:51.18) and Gavin Jorgensen was 12th (17:49.37).

Other results included Hunter Clark’s seventh-place effort in the discus with a throw of 36.67. Logan Krueger won the men’s hammer throw with a distance of 57.21 and the Beavers went 1-2-3 with Samuel Kreins finishing second (46.29) and Harris placing third in that event (45.53).

In the javelin finals, Leif Nelson placed third with a launch of 51.50. The Beavers are back in action next weekend (May 14-15) at the NSIC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Duluth, Minnesota.
