Minot High beats Williston; stays undefeated on season

Williston braved the deluge to play tennis against the Minot High Majettes, although the wet conditions adjusted the start time and location to an early time and from Hammond Park into the Cameron Indoor facility. The outcome has not changed yet for the season as the Majettes won 8-1 and improved their record to 11-0 for the season.

“It’s a different routine [doubles first, singles second] but we notified them early this morning that was the plan hoping to help with that,” said Minot High girls head tennis coach Scott DeLorme. “I think when you play inside, a lot of routines get changed so it takes a little while to make some adjustments.”

The toughest match of the day was at the No. 2 doubles where senior Sienna Ronning and sophomore Grace Olson faced Avy Ator and Yeva Smyrnova. Volleys lasted longer, serves were tougher, and the score went back and forth before the Majettes pair prevailed 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-5) in the end.

Senior Sidney Ressier and sophomore Kyllie Fettig handled Kiera Borreson and Gracia Tong 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles while junior Lila Olson and freshman Avan Thuner handled Presley Larsen and CeCe Bakken at No. 3 doubles 6-2, 6-0 for Minot High.

Fettig faced Borreson again at the No. 2 singles where the 6-2, 6-2 win was in favor of the Majettes. Ronning faced Nicole Enno at No. 3 singles and collected the 6-2, 6-1 win for Minot High. G. Olson defeated G. Tong 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4 singles for the Majettes as well.

At No. 5 singles, Century’s Presley Larsen came up short to L. Olson 6-1, 6-0 while Thuner defeated Smyrnova 6-2, 6-3 at the meet. The lone win for the Coyotes was at No. 1 singles where Ator beat Ressler 6-4, 6-4 in the final match of the day.

“We like to be outside but we have experienced players, and they know this is often how April is for our season,” said DeLorme. “We make the best of our situation and consider ourselves fortunate to have an indoor facility to use.”

Minot High will travel to Bismarck to face St. Mary’s on Friday, May 9, and will face both Fargo North and Fargo Davies on Saturday, May 10.
