Magi hockey captures 4-1 victory over Bismarck High

BISMARCK — The Minot High School boys hockey team earned a season sweep against WDA rival Bismarck High on Thursday night. Minot’s 4-1 win marked the first sweep of the Demons since the 2015-16 school year.

The Magicians (11-4, 9-1 WDA) pushed their season total to 30 points and moved into first place in the WDA standings with the win. The Demons (7-9, 6-4 WDA) now reside in second place with 27 points.

Minot sophomore forward Jayden Luck and senior forward Jack Plemel scored in the first period. Luck assisted on Plemel’s goal.

Bismarck sophomore forward Hunter Acker struck back with the Demons’ lone goal just 22 seconds into the second period. Minot held a 2-1 lead after two frames.

Plemel and Luck iced the game with goals in the third period. Junior defenseman Riley Opperude provided the assist on Luck’s second goal.

The Magi will travel east for a 3:15 p.m. contest on Saturday. Minot will square off against East Region leaders Grand Forks Central (12-3, 9-2 EDC).

Velva wrestling doubles up

Ryan, 48-24

VELVA — Only two out of the 14 matches on the mat Thursday evening between Region 3 wrestling rivals Velva and Bishop Ryan went the distance. The rest of the team dual featured 10 pins and two forfeits, as Velva cruised to a 48-24 victory at home.

The Aggies scored the first 30 points with pins from Colin Dean (1:46), Shayden Schiele (:54), Gunnar Mogen (2:42) and Triton Kaercher (1:42), plus a forfeit win for Elizabeth Massine at 120.

Connor and Wesley Harvey turned the tables for Ryan with a pair of pins at 138 and 145, respectively.

Velva surged back with pins by Bransyn Yanish, Michael Thomas and Brayden Selzler.

Ryan’s Corbin Okeson, who committed to St. Cloud State earlier in the day, stopped the bleeding with a 30-second pin at 182.

Following a double forfeit at 195, the final two matches went all three rounds in Ryan’s favor. Noah Swegarden edged out Jerimiah Jespersen, 4-3, at 220. Then, Keegan Henjum blanked Hunter Cooper, 3-0, at 285.

Both squads will feature at the East-West Tournament starting Jan. 31 in New Salem. Velva is slated to compete in a triangular meet the day before on Jan. 30 against hosts Tioga and Kenmare.
