Sprint cars highlight the first night of Motor Magic racing

Alex Eisen/MDN The 410 Winged Sprint Cars being paced around Nodak Speedway by a classic race car before the feature race Saturday evening in Minot.

Drag racing in the background, sprint cars were clicking off hot laps and collectible classics in the parking lot, the perfect atmosphere for the first night of Motor Magic dirt track racing at Nodak Speedway.

The 410 Winged Sprint Cars, Modifieds, Sport Mods, Stock Cars and Sport Compacts all ran full regular programs with heat races and main features.

The Hobby Stocks had more entries, so they ran heat races plus qualifiers on Saturday for a main feature this evening.

Here is a breakdown of the action on Saturday.

410 Winged

Sprint Cars

With the World of Outlaws not coming to Nodak Speedway this season, Saturday marked the first and only time this year that the sprint cars whipped around the 3/8-mile dirt oval in Minot.

The annual “Pin It To Win In” Tyler Fedyk Memorial sprint car race was won by Estevan’s Kyle Fedyk last season. Kyle Fedyk was a cousin to Tyler Fedyk, who died as a passenger in an ATV rollover near Minot in 2010.

Kyle Fedyk started second, grabbed the lead on the second lap and aimed to secure another emotional victory.

Minot native Greg Nikitenko had other ideas and got around him with 15 laps to go. With Nikitenko pulling away, a spin-out grouped everyone back together with nine laps left.

The duo pulled away from the field. Fedyk was within striking distance, just waiting for a mistake from Nikitenko. Unbelievably, it happened at the worst possible time.

Nikitenko blew a tire right before taking the white flag.

Fedyk swooped in for the unlikely victory. Nikitenko limped his sprint car around the track for one more lap to take second place.

IMCA Sport Mods

Pole sitter Darren Medler was eventually bested by a handful of restarts in the main feature. Kelly Henderson and Chase Conway went around with 13 laps left.

Conway, who started 10th, took the lead away from Henderson with 10 laps left. Henderson hung around and dramatically made the winning pass coming out of the final corner.

Henderson nipped Conway by the nose of his sport mod. Medler settled for third but was right in the mix for the win in the final laps as well.

IMCA Stock Cars

After slicking up the surface, the stock cars took to the track for its main feature.

Mike Hagen found himself in a battle with the father-son tandem of Joe and Dalton Flory. The three Williston natives commanded the front.

Dalton Flory protected the bottom, sending Hagen to the top. Joe Flory kept to the bottom in third place.

Joe Flory eventually snuck under Hagen for second place.

Flipping cars of Cody Nelson, Gregg Mann and Jake Brown brought out a red flag with five laps left. All drivers were unharmed, unlike their cars.

Dalton Flory held off Joe Flory for the victory.

IMCA Sport Compacts

All-Star Race winner James Gilbert, Larry King and Christopher Zenz put on a show. Three-wide racing at the front with no room for error.

After swapping positions nearly every lap, Gilbert finally got away with five laps left in the 12-lap race. The feature stayed under green the entire way with Gilbert grabbing the win. Behind him were Zenz and King, in that order.

IMCA Modifieds

The last feature of the night belonged to the modifieds.

The feature ran late. Available results at press time are on page C2.

IMCA Hobby Stocks

There were a total of 33 Hobby Stocks in attendance. They ran four heat races with everyone qualifying for two B features later in the evening. The heat races determined the start positions.

Andrew Bertsch, Austin Green, Kadi Ruby and Trevor Haas won the heat races.

The top 6 drivers in each of the B mains advanced straight to the A feature this evening.

The first B feature started with a four-car crash caused by heat winner Green getting sideways out of corner No. 4.

Bertsch held the lead until the second to last lap. Brandon Honrud made the winning pass on the outside. Other drivers transferring included Riese Dignan, Shawn Green, Alex Tvedt and Connor Hanson.

A green-white-checkered finish occurred in the second B feature. Roaring to the line a big group, Trevor Haas beat out Leevi Runge for the win. Kadi Ruby, Brad King, Zach Lutz and Jason Ruby finished in the transfer spots.

There will be last-chance qualifiers this evening before the Hobby Stocks race another feature event.

The second night of Motor Magic racing at 5 p.m. this evening will be the final races held at Nodak Speedway this season.
