Girls Soccer: Minot High, Minot North both fall in state quarterfinals

The Minot High girls soccer team won’t be making a seventh consecutive trip to the state championship match and Minot North will have to wait another year to try and get its first victory at the tournament.

The Majettes surrendered a pair of goals in the second half in a 2-1 loss to West Fargo Sheyenne and Grand Forks Red River pitched a shut out in a 4-0 victory over the Sentinels in the quarterfinal round of the state tournament at Sanford Sports Complex in Bismarck on Thursday, May 28.

Minot High (12-3-1) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Kaylee Jackson found the back of the net against Sheyenne goalkeeper Reese Shotley. Ainsley McKibben assisted on the goal.

Tenley McMenamy tied the match in the 49th minute and Kaylie Gaffney netted the game-winner in the 77th minute to send the Mustangs (14-2-2) to the semifinals. Sheyenne will play Fargo Shanley at 6:45 p.m. on Friday, May 29.

Kynsli Gillmore finished with nine saves for the Majettes, while Shotley made 11 stops. Minot High held a slim 12-11 edge in shots on goal.

The Majettes play Jamestown in a consolation match at 2:15 p.m..

Minot North (10-6-1) played the Red Raiders even through the first 37 minutes before Red River scored four times over the final 43 minutes.

Taylor Hodny gave the Red Raiders (12-2-2) a 1-0 lead heading into the locker room in the 38th minute.

Myah Nicola stretched the lead in the 45th minute off an assist from Reese Remz, who scored the team’s third goal in the 56th minute. Havyn Boespflug punctuated the victory with her goal in the final minute with Ella Bry earning the assist.

Camryn Guy finished with seven saves for the Sentinels, while Finn Anderson made four saves for Red River.

The Red Raiders advance to the semifinals, where they will play Mandan at 4:30 p.m. The Sentinels play Fargo Davies in a consolation match at noon.

Mandan was the only team from the West Region to win its quarterfinal match. Sarah Helderop scored the lone goal in the 51st minute in Mandan’s 1-0 victory over Fargo Davies.

The other quarterfinal match saw EDC champion Fargo Shanley defeating Jamestown, 3-1. Molly Flaherty had two goals for the Deacons.
