Burlington bashes Scobey, 16-6, for District 2 title

Alex Eisen/MDN The Burlington Bulldogs celebrate after scoring the final run in a 16-6 five-inning victory over Scobey in the District 2 championship game played Saturday afternoon in Burlington.

BURLINGTON — Twenty-four combined runs were scored Friday when the Burlington Bulldogs powered past the Scobey Blues, 16-8.

In a rematch Saturday afternoon for the American Legion Class B District 2 championship, No. 3-seeded Bulldogs broke out the bats once again for 16 runs to capture the district title over top-seeded Scobey (Montana) in Burlington.

The Bulldogs only needed five innings to secure a 16-6 win.

“We knew a lot of runs were going to be scored because everyone was low on pitching,” Burlington head coach Matt Koronka said. “That’s a big deal. So, you’re going to have to score more than three runs to win the game. And we have been down before this year and we just kept battling.”

After Burlington starter Rylan Olson got the first two outs to start the game, Scobey loaded the bases for Devin Halverson. He sent a sinking line drive into the outfield that center fielder Braydon Bonn couldn’t reel in on a dive.

The ball rolled to the fence for a bases-clearing double.

Scobey led 3-0 after the top of the first inning.

“I was kind of scared, actually,” Olson said. “I was doing alright, but my arm was starting to hurt. They have some really big hitters on their team. But, I thought we would pull through.”

Burlington bounced back with a vengeance, scoring four runs in the bottom half. Drew Clock provided an RBI groundout, Olson helped his own cause with a two-run single and Toby Zietz laid down an RBI bunt single.

The Bulldogs didn’t stop there. With the bases loaded and nobody out in the second inning, Ryan Albertson drew a walk, Olson singled, Zietz walked and Parker Benzmiller hit an RBI sacrifice fly.

That wasn’t all. Later in the inning, after an RBI groundout by Will Mayo, Bonn and Will Pearson drove in runs with doubles.

Burlington plated eight runs in the second inning to take a commanding 12-3 lead. Through two innings, the Bulldogs had sent 22 batters to the plate.

“Hits are contagious,” Pearson said. “Somebody gets a hit and everybody just keeps it rolling. We were having some fun.”

Scobey, not going away, countered with three runs in the third. A wild pitch got one run in and Austyn Fishell knocked in two more with a single.

Speaking of wild pitches, three of them allowed Clock to eventually score from first base in the fourth inning to put the score at 13-6 in Burlington’s favor.

The Bulldogs finished the championship game in the fifth inning.

Following a couple of bases-loaded walks, Olson got the opportunity to finish what he started. Olson, off the mound and into the batter’s box, singled back up the middle for the 16th and final run.

“It was pretty crazy,” said Olson, who went 4-for-5 in the game. “He was throwing way inside on me, but then he threw one right down the middle. I was able to hit it and we won it, that was pretty cool.”

Burlington will face District 6 winner May-Port in the first round of the American Legion Class B State Tournament Wednesday in Hazen.

“We are just excited to keep playing for another week,” Koronka said. “We are going to go forth and give our best effort. Whatever happens, happens. It’s just nice to be there.”
