Jarvin Mattern
Jarvin Mattern is the valedictorian of the graduating class at Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood High School. He plans to attend Arizona State University to pursue a business degree in the fall.
Mattern’s father is the road supervisor for the Renville County Road Department and his mother is a stay-at-home mom. He has two brothers, one of which is a sophomore at MLS High School, the other has graduated. He also has two older sisters.
Mattern’s favorite high school memory is when his graduating class continued their homecoming tradition of wrecking a car for their homecoming parade float. He is involved with the Minot and Mohall farmers markets.
When asked what advice he would give to his younger self, Mattern said, “I would tell myself to work hard at everything that you can and invest in Bitcoin.”
Kendra Adams
Kendra Adams is the salutatorian of the graduating class at Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood High School. This fall she plans to study biological sciences at North Dakota State University.
Adams’s father is a farmer, and her mother is the MLS High School principal. Her little brother is a third grader at MLS and her older brother graduated Bismark State College with a degree in agronomy.
Adams’s favorite high school memory was spending time with her friends in Mr. Southam’s physical education class. She is involved in her church outside of school.
When asked what advice she would give her younger self, Adams said, “Have more fun during school and make memories.”
Emma Southam
Emma Southam is a top student at Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood High School. This fall she plans to study exercise science at the University of Mary.
Southam’s family is very important to her, she said, “My dad works at the school so I’m with him all the time. He is one of my best friends and biggest supporters. My brothers were always pushing me to be my best. They never held back when it came to sports. My dad was always the one willing to bring me and my brothers to the gym on the weekends and we would always play a competitive game, and I think that’s where my competitive spirit came from. And my mom has her own CPA business and works (a lot of) hours. I think I learned my work ethic from her. Seeing her work so hard rubbed off on me. Now anything I do I put my one-hundred percent effort into it, and I think my mom taught me that, and that has made so many things in my life easier.”
Southam’s favorite memory from high school was a toss-up between winning the regional championship in basketball and competing at the state tournament for softball where MLS coopted with Westhope-Newburg, she said, “Those girls ended up being like family to me, so everything we did, we had a blast.”
When asked what advice she would give her five-year-old self, Southam said, “I would tell myself to never give up on your dreams, even if it gets difficult, keep working hard and everything will work out.”
