Driving down Main Street in downtown Minot on Saturday afternoon, the sound of live music being played could be heard from blocks away. Budget Music & Video downtown, along with other local businesses, came together with local artists to celebrate National Record Store Day.
National Record Store Day began in 2007 to celebrate brick-and-mortar establishments that have always been a hub for musical discovery. Currently, there are Record Store Day participating stores on every continent except Antarctica.
According to the Associated Press, the number of record stores is growing and sales of CDs and vinyl are outselling digital downloads for the first time since 2011.
Dylan Lee, owner of Budget Music and Video downtown, said this was the store’s 11th year participating in the event, and their fourth year celebrating downtown.
“It’s fun,” Lee said. “We get anybody that wants to be involved involved and try and make it fun with the live entertainment and the beer garden and kombucha sales. The more businesses that want to participate, the better.”

Lee said the event was doing good for downtown, which needs more events like this.
“Unfortunately, Record Store Day only comes once a year,” Lee added.
Record Store Day occurs every third Saturday of April, this year landing on April 21, and is a day for communities to rally around their local record stores and celebrate music.
There was a live band setup outside the store for local bands to celebrate music in its purest form. Downtown saw live performances from A Cult Pity, Chris Stroschein, Transparents, Marigold and Duffy & The Beer Slayers.
The store itself had deals galore and upon making a purchase in store, customers were offered a chance to enter a raffle to win prize packages from businesses including: Artmain, Schatz Crossroads, Off The Vine, Magic City Hoagies, Urban Winery, 10 North Main, Michelle F, Sammy’s Pizza, Sinclair Stop N’ Shop, iMagicon, and of course Budget Music & Video.

Other downtown businesses joined the fun, offering discounts of their own. If there was a purchase made at BMV, Artmain would take the receipt as a coupon for 10 percent off anything in store. Michelle F offered 15 percent off any purchase with the coupon code #Vinylisforever.
A chalk mural outside the store was provided by talented local artist Alyssa Kloss, and a poster was provided by the work of Ben Dagget, another local artist.
Lee sees Record Store Day as a communal event and hopes to add more participants every year. He enjoys seeing the community get involved and excited in the local art and downtown scene.
“It’s fun, if you missed it, you’ll have to hit us up next year,” Lee said.
