State AA Volleyball: Majettes take 6th; Sheyenne wins 3rd title
Playing in its first state tournament since 2011, the Majettes came away with a sixth-place finish after falling in four sets to Bismarck High, 27-25, 25-12, 19-25, 25-18, in the fifth-place match on Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Bismarck Event Center.
It was Minot High’s second sixth-place finish at the state tournament, the first coming in 1997. The Majettes’ best showing came in 1999 when they finished fourth.
“We’re proud of our effort against a familiar opponent,” Minot High coach Jesse Goertzen said. “They played well and we let them go on too many long runs. We battled to the end though and made them earn every point. We’re proud of this team and the season that we had.”
Everette Deschamp and Kynsli Gillmore led the Majettes with a team-high 11 kills. Deschamp also had 15 digs and Gillmore served up two aces. Mackenzie Dufner capped off a record-setting career at Minot High with 34 assists, finishing with more than 2,500 assists. Dufner will continue her volleyball career next year at the University of North Dakota.
Jordyn Rood finished with a match-high 20 kills. Aspen Roaldson did a little bit of everything for the Demons. She led the team in assists (48), blocks (2.5) and digs (13).
Deschamp was named to the all-tournament team.
West Fargo Sheyenne claimed its third state title in four years, defeating Fargo Davies in five sets, 25-17, 25-20, 27-29, 22-25, 15-10. The Mustangs cruised to a two-set lead, but the Eagles battled back, winning an extended third set and following it up with a close victory in the fourth to set up a final set for the state title.
