Women’s Hockey: Beavers pick up win, tie in series against Niagara
Over the past four days, the Minot State women’s hockey team has played four games and 255 minutes across two states spanning more than 300 miles and managed to go unbeaten with a victory and a trio of ties.
After a pair of ties in Adrian, Mich. on Thursday and Friday, the Beavers immediately hit the road for a weekend series with Niagara University in upstate New York and came away with a 3-1 victory on Saturday and a 3-3 tie on Sunday.
Travel legs didn’t appear to be an issue in the series opener, as MSU’s Carlin Zant got the Beavers on the board 57 seconds into the first period for her first career goal on assists from Karlyn Gudz and Paige Kozak.
The Beavers (3-2-0-3 W-L-OTL-T) would tack on a goal in the second and the third. Kozak put Minot State up 2-0 at 16:50 of the second period before Krissy Rink stretched the lead to 3-0 with less than four minutes remaining in regulation.
Niagara spoiled Bailey Grunewald’s shutout bid when Jaidyn Clipperton got her team on the board with 3:10 left.
The Beavers outshot the Purple Eagles 41-19.
Grunewald made 18 saves to earn her first collegiate victory. Mackenzie Addley finished with 38 saves for Niagara.
Three goals wasn’t enough for a victory on Sunday, but it was enough to earn MSU its third tie in four games.
After a scoreless first period, MSU and Niagara combined for five goals in the middle stanza. Cameron Schmidt and Liberty Miller netted goals for the Beavers, but the Purple Eagles took a 3-2 lead into the intermission on goals from Kate Custance, Layla Rushforth and Easton McComber. Custance and McComber’s goals came on the power play.
Krissy Rink rescued the Beavers in the final moments of regulation, pulling the team even with 1:11 left to force overtime.
Minot State again held a sizable advantage in shots on goal, outshooting the Purple Eagles 45-29. Hannah Palumbo and Jullian Ackerman split time in net for Minot State. Palumbo played the first 40 minutes, finishing with 17 saves. Ackerman finished the game and recorded nine saves. Addley made 42 saves for Niagara.
The Beavers host Arizona State for a two-game series at Maysa Arena beginning on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 3:45 p.m.
