Nedrose girls defend home hardwood against Killdeer

Kari Gibb/MDN Nedrose sophomore Ashley Roberts (23) shoots for two of her 23 points over Killdeer junior Taylee Anderson (5) at Nedrose High School on Thursday, February 6, in a Region 3 vs Region 4 battle.
The Cowgirls traveled from Killdeer to take on the Lady Cardinals in a Region 3 vs Region 4 battle of hoops. Despite an evenly played start to the game, three point shooting in the second quarter gave the hosts the lead that held until the final 58-41 win for Nedrose.
The hosts held an 8-7 lead at the end of the first quarter of play with both teams working to overcome the chill in the air and warm up the scoring. With 3:36 left to play in the second quarter, the momentum was still even with the scoring as Nedrose led 17-15 at that point.
The last three and a half minutes of the first half belonged to the three point shooting by the Lady Cardinals as the hosts took a 27-17 lead into the halftime break. That same shooting trend continued into the third quarter of play as Nedrose built a 36-18 lead with 4:46 left to play in the quarter.
The hosts built the gap until 1:17 left to go in the third quarter to 45-28 before the visiting Cowgirls stepped up the effort and turned the momentum. By the end of the third, Nedrose led 47-31 to start the final quarter of play.
Rebounding, press defense and better shooting kept Killdeer in the game. With 5:54 to play, Nedrose led 50-38 as the Cowgirls went on a 10-5 run to end the third and start the fourth. Every time the visitors seemed to swing the momentum, one of the Lady Cardinals would hit a three. The ball movement and shooting by the hosts kept the lead up to the end.
Nedrose was led by Ashley Roberts with 23 points- 15 of those from 3-point shots. Lilly Nelson added 15 with many of those second chance scores from offensive rebounds. Leila West added 11 points for the Lady Cardinals in the win.
Nedrose improved to 7-10 on the season and host Turtle Mountain Community High School on Saturday, February 8, and will travel to South Prairie-Max on Monday, February 10, for their next games.
Killdeer was led by Mickellyn Walker with 21 points while Abby Hardersen added nine in the effort. Killdeer dropped to 5-13 with a trip to Watford City on Monday for their next game.
