Host team handles business at Justin Demary Memorial Tournament

Sean Williams/MDN Kellan Burke (3) of the Minot Vistas fights off a pitch during a game that occurred earlier this season at Corbett Field.

A successful Saturday that featured a pair of wins over the Mandan Chiefs and the Glendive Blue Devils put the Minot Vistas in Sunday’s championship game at the Justin Demary Memorial Tournament, which took place at Corbett Field.

Previously known as the Heilman’s Performance Invitational, the name of the tournament was changed recently to honor the life of Justin Demary, who was a part of the Minot community in many ways.

Last season was the first time the tournament was changed to the Justin Demary Memorial Tournament, which saw the host team Minot Vistas not make it as far as they did this year.

Not only did the Vistas provide great hospitality during the special three-day tournament, but they also played great baseball as they won their first Justin Demary Memorial Tournament championship with a 3-0 shutout win over the Kalispell Lakers on Sunday.

The Vistas got on the board quickly in the title game and once they did, they never looked back. In the bottom of the second, a pair of RBI singles from Tyler Collins and Teegan Strand gave the Vistas a 2-0 lead that they never lost.

Although the Vistas’ bats went quiet for a while, they were able to extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Carson Deaver singled and Tre Stewart scored on an error to bring the game to its final of 3-0.

Even just one run proved to be more than enough, thanks to the brilliant performance from Tyler Buchanan on the mound. Picking up the win and going all seven innings, Buchanan allowed no runs on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Over half of those Lakers’ hits came in the first two innings, as Buchanan proceeded to settle in and shut Kalispell’s offense down the rest of the way.

At the plate, the Vistas got one hit each from Easton Panasuk, Parker Hann, Tyson Ruzicka and Stewart, while both Collins and Strand had one hit and drove in one run each to lead the team.

Following the conclusion of the Justin Demary Memorial Tournament, it was announced that Kellan Burke of Minot was named the Offensive MVP.
