HILLSBORO — Over the weekend, a pair of local amateur boxers battled at the Hillsboro Toros Boxing event. With the help of coaches Dillon Bercier and Richard Calavera, both Karena Verbitsky and Denzel Knutson were able to leave the event with trophies in their hands as champions.

At 22-years-old, the fight was Verbitsky’s first as an amateur, where she utilized frequent jabs and a powerful right cross to defeat Tori Smith in three rounds. Ending in a split decision in Verbitsky’s favor, she shared that this was a beneficial start to her amateur boxing career.

“This bout was a crucial learning experience for me. I am excited to continue honing my craft and competing against tougher opponents,” said Verbitsky. Following a successful first bout, Verbitsky will continue her amateur career with the goal of earning a spot at the Olympics.

Making it a very successful night for local boxers was Knutson, who utilized good footwork and counters to defeat Peyton Fassett in three rounds. The 25-year-old Knutson is currently riding a winning streak in the ring, and he will look to extend that streak through amateur competition this year.

The local boxing team works out of the YMCA in Minot and trains boxers at all levels, from novice to Olympic. The program is open to the community, and they offer free beginner classes from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Additionally, they offer private training upon request.

“Our goal is to serve the community, get kids off the streets and hopefully create a few champions in the process,” coach Dillon Bercier said.

Although Verbitsky is in the early stages of her amateur boxing career, she shared that the program has already done so much for her.

“I’ve been to some of the best gyms in the nation and these coaches offer a drive and passion for the sport that I have never seen. I wouldn’t be a champion without them,” said Verbitsky.

Up next, the team will have fights in Wisconsin, South Dakota and then the USA Boxing Women’s Championships in Toledo, Ohio.

They are currently looking for sponsorship from local businesses to help with the cost of travel and uniform expenses. If interested, please email karena.verbitsky@gmail.com.
