Bats fall silent as Beavers drop pair on road

DULUTH, Minn. – The Minot State University women’s softball team took a four-game winning streak with it to Minnesota. That’s where it will stay, as the Beavers failed to score a run in Thursday’s doubleheader against the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

Reagan Floyd only allowed two runs on nine hits in the first game; however, she didn’t get any run support from her teammates, as the Beavers fell to the Bulldogs 2-0.

Minnesota-Duluth opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Nicole Schmitt reached home on an error by Minot State catcher Anna LaCount. The Bulldogs added another score when Schmitt scored her second unearned run of the game, when she advanced to second base on an error by the Beavers’ center fielder before being driven home on an Elle Potts single to second base.

Floyd (8-8) pitched a complete game for Minot State, allowing two unearned runs on nine hits, while striking out six and walking none.

Allison Luoma picked up the win for Minnesota-Duluth to improve to 3-3 on the season. Luoma got the start for the Bulldogs and pitched five scoreless innings, giving up four hits and zero walks. She struck out two. Lauren Dixon pitched two no-hit innings of relief, finishing with one strikeout and one ball.

Minnesota-Duluth posted three runs in the bottom of the first inning and repeated the feat in the fifth to secure a 6-0 win over visiting Minot State.

Like the first game, Schmitt was responsible for opening the scoring when she hit a double to left field that scored Julia Gronholz and Kiana Bender. Schmitt came around and scored herself three batters later when Khendal Johnson doubled to center field, making it 3-0.

The Beavers held the Bulldogs scoreless for three innings. Then, in the fifth inning, Kat Burkhardt hit a bases loaded, three-run double to right center field that scored Kate Mohr, Johnson and Schmitt.

Paige Kellog hit a double to lead Minot State offensively.

Lauren Dixon picked up her 20th win of the season to improve her regular season record to 20-5 for Minnesota-Duluth. Dixon allowed two hits in five scoreless innings of play and finished with one walk against eight strikeouts in the win. Allyssa Williams pitched two innings to close out the game, allowing one hit, a walk and two strikeouts.

Gabi Dawyduk (9-7) threw one inning after getting the start. Dawyduk allowed three runs, all earned, on three hits. She also allowed two walks while striking out one. Kierra Fournier pitched the remaining five innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits while walking one and striking out two.

The losses dropped Minot State to 21-17 overall and 17-9 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play. The Beavers are just 2-10 on the road this season after finishing their home schedule a solid 15-4.

Minnesota Duluth improves to 37-14 overall and 18-8 in NSIC play.

The Beavers will close out the regular season with a doubleheader against St. Cloud State today, with first pitch of the first game at 9 a.m.
