Magicians win in Williston 8-1

The WDA West Region first-place Minot High boys tennis team notched another win on Tuesday as they traveled to Williston and won handily over the Coyotes by a final score of 8-1. In the process, Minot remains undefeated in the conference at 5-0.

On the day, Minot won five of the six singles matches, as well as all three doubles games. At the No. 1 position, Zach Diehl was tested in the first set by Williston’s Mason Haugenoe, but eventually came out a 7-5 winner. Diehl then cruised to victory in the second set, winning 6-2.

At the No. 3 slot, Grayson Schaeffer had little trouble putting away Braylon Higgs in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. In the No. 4 position, Minot’s Hunter Rice defeated Dawson Martin 7-5, 6-1. Meanwhile, Colby Opp won by an identical score over Carter Borreson at No. 5. In the No. 6 spot, Brayden McLean put away Carter Hansen in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Aidan Diehl’s 5-7, 6-2, 3-6 loss to Colby Nehring was Minot’s only setback of the day.

In doubles competition, the Magi tandem of Zach and Aidan Diehl earned a three-set victory over Nehring and Haugenoe 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 position. At No. 2, Schaeffer and Opp made quick work of Martin and Borreson, 6-1, 6-0. Minot’s No. 3 squad of Rice and McLean had similar success in their match with Higgs and Hansen, also winning 6-1, 6-0.

Afterward, MHS head coach Scott DeLorme acknowledged the final score was not indicative of how hard the opposition competed throughout the meet.

“They gave us a tough test from the start,” DeLorme said of the Williston Coyotes. “We were down in four of the six singles matches early on, but once we got our footing, I thought we played very well throughout the lineup. Zach Diehl secured our first win win straight sets and we quickly followed suit with four victories more to lead 5-1 after singles. On the doubles side, we won all three including two of them in straight sets.”

Next up on the schedule, Minot plans to host its final home match of the season against Jamestown this Thursday. Start time for that meet is slated for 4:15 p.m. at Hammond Park.
