Coaches report: Ray/Powers Lake co-HC Seth Wisthoff

The Ray/Powers Lake Outlaws football team earned its fifth win in as many games this season, defeating Tioga at home on Friday, 44-6.

In that game, the Outlaws set the tone early on offense and enjoyed a 22-0 edge after one quarter of play. Tyson Enget started out the scoring barrage with a 57-yard touchdown reception from Jace Nelson, who would later add two touchdown receptions of his own. All told, the Outlaws racked up 357 yards of total offense.

Next up on the schedule, Ray/Powers Lake plans to take on Divide County this Friday night, also at home. The Minot Daily News reached out to Outlaws co-head coach Seth Wisthoff for his perspective on last week’s win, as well as what his team needs to do this week to remain undefeated on the season. Here is what Wisthoff had to say.

MDN: Last week, how did your offense manage to set the tone for the rest of the game with 22 unanswered points in the first quarter?

Wisthoff: The first few drives we were able to be really explosive. That is how we want to start every game. Our goal moving forward is to bring that energy to every drive throughout the game.

MDN: Talk about the connection between Jace Nelson and Tyson Enget. What makes them two of your most potent offensive weapons?

Wisthoff: Those two are good friends and great athletes. They feed off each other well and the rest of the team looks to them to bring energy and explosiveness.

MDN: Aside from the game against Surrey in Week 2, the defense has surrendered only 7.5 points per game in all of your other wins. What is the strongest part about that unit’s performance so far?

Wisthoff: Our guys have done a good job of bending but not breaking. We want to be a physical unit that can wear teams down. That hopefully makes it difficult for teams to put together multiple drives without committing turnovers or mistakes.

MDN: With the club 5-0 on the season, what improvements would you like to see from your team as you approach the stretch run?

Wisthoff: We want to improve in every area, every week and don’t want our guys to be satisfied with where they are at. We as coaches need to be working to improve and we want that to rub off on our players as well.

MDN: What do you know about your next opponent Divide County, and what will be the plan heading into that ballgame?

Wisthoff: Divide County is a disciplined, well-coached football team. You know they are going to have a strong game plan and work to execute it. We need to match that discipline and be ready to take advantage of every opportunity that they give us.
