Lunde leads Majettes past Bravettes 83-49
Freshman breaks Minot High single-game point record
Ryan Ladika/MDN Avery Lunde (22) goes up for a layup during the first half of the Majettes' Monday afternoon game.
“I’ve been wanting it.”
Freshman guard Avery Lunde achieved the honor she had been gunning for all season, pouring in 34 points to break Minot High’s single-game scoring record in the Majettes’ 83-49 President’s Day victory over the Turtle Mountain Community High School Bravettes.
Allie Nelson, now a member of the track and field squad at North Dakota State University, set the previous record at 33 points during the 2019-20 season.
“I’ve had two close games with a pretty high point total, so I knew I could do it. I’ve gained the confidence this year to get to this point. It feels good to finally beat a good player in Allie Nelson,” Lunde continued.
The Magi faithful seated in the bleachers could tell something special was brewing from the opening tipoff.
After a game-opening three-point shot from Turtle Mountain’s Kobi Keplin, Lunde kicked off her historic day scoring 13 of the Majettes’ first 16 points, helping open up an early 16-10 lead.
Maya Aguilar then made a two-point shot, and Lunde went back to work. The 5’7″ guard scored nine more points in the midst of a 19-8 stretch for the home five. A timeout was called with six minutes and 56 seconds remaining in the first half and Minot holding a 35-18 lead.
Lunde and Maggie Fricke led the Majettes to halftime, scoring seven and four points, respectively, before Alexis Haider drained a buzzer-beating three-pointer and shrugged her way into the locker room with a smile spread across her face. Minot was in firm command of the affairs, leading 49-28 at halftime.
Lunde herself had 29 points to her name between halves, besting her totals from her last two games, 27 points on Feb. 12 and 28 on Feb. 9.
“I was just feeling it,” she said of her impressive performance. “Everyone’s giving me the ball, lanes were open, and everything was opening up for me.”
The Majettes rattled off another lengthy scoring run following the second half’s opening tip. Taury Hight made an early two-point field goal, and Minot outscored the Bravettes 18-10 to take a 67-38 lead with eight minutes and 40 seconds on the clock.
Five different scorers factored in to the run, including six points from Fricke, four from Hight, three from Haider, three from Lunde, and two from Kierra Orr.
With just under four minutes left in the game and Minot ahead by a 71- 42 score, Lunde stepped to the charity stripe to take the shots that would etch her name in the history books.
She nailed both free throws, and with thunderous applause and a fist bump from the Bravettes’ head coach David Gourneau Jr., she took her seat on the bench with 34 points in the game.
A 10-7 run by the Majettes that followed sealed the 83-49 win, gave Minot its second win over Turtle Mountain of the campaign, and snapped a brief two-game losing skid.
Lunde’s 34 points led all scorers, and Fricke also hit double digits with 10 points. Haider finished with nine. For the Bravettes, Mason Ferris led the squad with six points.
The Majettes have a short time to celebrate, though, as the squad is scheduled to be back in action Feb. 16 against Watford City. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
