Expedition League suspends 2020 season

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Expedition League announced the suspension of the 2020 season Friday morning. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the start of the season will be delayed from its scheduled Opening Day of Tuesday, May 26.

The Souris Valley Sabre Dogs in the Expedition League play their home games at Corbett Field in Minot. The league also includes other teams in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming. Additionally, the Wheat City Whiskey Jacks are the league’s only Canadian team.

Steve Wagner, the Expedition League president, offered his thoughts in a press release.

“Even though we won’t be able to start our 2020 season on May 26, we’re confident that we will be able to serve our communities with outstanding baseball and incredible, fun, family entertainment sometime this summer,” Wagner said. “One of the key tenets of the Expedition League’s mission statement has always been to be vital, contributing members of our communities.”

Because of Canadian travel restrictions and additional limitations on summer gatherings, the Whiskey Jacks can’t play at their home stadium of Andrews Field in Brandon, Manitoba. The Whiskey Jacks are looking to host their home games in North Dakota, with Grand Forks already listed as a possible destination.

“We’re extremely disappointed that circumstances won’t allow us to play in Brandon this season,” Wagner said. “But we’re excited to play in an outstanding North Dakota city.”
