Alex’s Tale of the Tape #259, Date: Jan. 13, 2017

The Des Lacs-Burlington boys basketball team employed a harassing trap defense to defeat the Lewis & Clark-Berthold Bombers, 77-57, in a Region 6 regular-season clash in Burlington.

The Bombers held a 15-14 lead after the first quarter, but the Lakers went to an all-out blitz after that.

It reached an all-time high when the Bombers were called for a 10-second backcourt violation. Yet, in a sense, that was at least better than another steal by Lakers senior Drew Pearson or junior Eddie White Bear.

Pearson led all scorers with 26 points and six steals. Rylan Bachmeier (14) and Tanner Johnson (12) finished in double-digits for DLB as well.

Garrett Hanson scored 23 points to lead the Bombers in scoring.

“If you get into a running game with them, you know what happens,” Berthold head coach Christopher Brown said. “In the second quarter, they got it going and we didn’t take care of the basketball. Kudos to their defense, though. They forced some turnovers on us, and we just had a hard time rebounding from that.”

The Bishop Ryan volleyball team sweeps Surrey, and their former coach Kaycee Grochow, by set scores of 25-7, 25-20 and 25-16.

The Lions relied on a balanced attack, as four players — Sidney Lovelace, Sealy Rovig, Sylvie Kramer and Sydney Upton — recorded six or more kills to overpower the Mustangs.

Ryan took control early on in the first set by scoring nine of the first 10 points and never slowed down. The second set was last tied at 19-19 before the Lions pulled away. Surrey went down 16-8 in the third set and battled to trade points the rest of the way, but ultimately fell 25-16.

Lovelace and Rovig each had a team-high eight kills.

Katie Aberle and Hunter Fuchs combined for nine kills and five blocks to lead the Mustangs.

“I feel like we grow every week,” first-year Ryan head coach Nick Theis said. “Every week they do something different that I didn’t know we could do… This week, definitely our hitting has made a difference. There are times when a set isn’t perfect, then we tend to make the error. Today, I felt like we got ourselves behind the ball, did what we worked on and put it in play.”

Alex’s Tale of the Tape #176, Date: Nov. 11, 2016

A year removed from only winning one varsity conference match, the Minot High volleyball team found itself one win away from reaching the Class A State Tournament.

The No. 5-seeded Majettes eliminated No. 8-seeded Bismarck St. Mary’s in straight sets (25-23, 25-9, 25-23) in a West Region Tournament loser-out contest.

The first set was all Minot, 18-10, before the Saints roared back to even the score at 21-21 and then 22-22. The Majettes regained composure to take the opening frame by the minimum.

Minot sailed through the second set with ease.

The Majettes let a seven-point cushion fade away in the third set. The Saints tied the score at 23-23. Again, the Majettes pushed through.

Liz Lucy finished with a team-high 10 kills, followed closely by Kali Askvig with nine. Riley Irmen tossed up 23 assists, with Brooke Nelson adding nine more.

“We had a good warm-up, I just felt connected with the ball,” Nelson said. “We played great, played as a team and communicated well. Beating them in three sets just feels really good.”
