Alex’s Tale of the Tape #1,881, Date: July 27, 2019

The Burlington Bulldogs broke out the bats in a 16-8 win over the Scobey Blues in the American Legion Class B District 2 championship game.

With fatigued arms across the board at the end of a grueling regional tournament, the batters had a field day at the plate. Seven runs were scored in the first inning alone with Scobey opening the game with a three-run inning before giving up four runs in the bottom half.

Burlington put up a crooked eight spot in the second inning. Through two innings, the Bulldogs sent 22 batters to the plate.

Starting pitcher Rylan Olson ended the game in the fifth inning with his bat. Olson singled back up the middle for the 16th and final run to enforce the eight-run mercy rule.

“It was pretty crazy,” Olson said. “He was throwing way inside on me, but then he threw one right down the middle. I was able to hit it, and we won it. That was pretty cool.”

The Bishop Ryan boys basketball team suffers a 66-60 loss to Oak Grove in the first round of the Class B state tournament inside the Minot State Dome.

Ryan got off to a fast start, 11-5, but Oak Grove pushed back in the second quarter to lead by two points at halftime, 28-26.

The Grovers put the game away in the third quarter with a 14-4 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Andrew Christianson, who finished with a team-high 23 points.

Ben Bohl also put up 23 points for the Lions, followed by Jake Bohl (16) and Eli Stewart (10).

Ryan couldn’t overcome Oak Grove’s third-quarter surge.

“We weren’t ourselves defensively tonight,” Ryan head coach Brock Teets said. “This game got into the 60’s, and that’s not us. We gave up 10 offensive rebounds, that’s not us. It was the wrong time for us not to play our style of basketball.”

The No. 4-seeded Minot Minotauros knock off the top-seeded Aberdeen Wings in the opening round of the NAHL playoffs. The Minotauros won the all decisive Game 5 in Aberdeen, 3-0, behind a 39-save shutout performance from goaltender Samu Lonkila.

Minot climbed back from a 2-1 series deficit to send the regular-season Central Divison champion Wings packing.

The Minotauros got goals from Ryan Green, Ondrej Pavel and Nolan Sawchuk. Minot was outshot 39-21 in the contest.

Lonkila stood on his head between the pipes.

“(Lonkila) looked like a wall,” Minotauros head coach Marty Murray said. “He looked like he could have been in there all night with them trying to score on him. That’s the kind of zone he was in. He was dialed in. You need your goalies to be clutch performers, and he was that and then some tonight.”
