Positive preliminaries for Magi swim & dive at state

WEST FARGO — The Minot High School boys swimming and diving team had a successful preliminary showing on the first day of the state meet Friday in West Fargo.

Minot, the two-time defending state champions, secured 17 spots in championship heats, eight more in consolation finals and four divers advanced to the semifinals heading into the last day of the season.

Out of the nine preliminaries held on Friday at the Hulbert Aquatic Center, the Magi won three of them. Minot also placed inside the top three in each event except for the 200 and 500.

Notable Magi prelim performances, which earned them the right to compete for an individual state championships this afternoon on Day 2, are listed below.

200: Grant Schaeffer (fifth, 1:47.63) and Alexander King (sixth, 1:48.62).

200 IM: Dominic Yoder (first, 1:58.11), Jack Wolsky (third, 2:00.10), Josh Boen (fourth, 2:00.93) and William Walker-Rozo (fifth, 2:01.06).

50: Zac Spaulding (third, 21.98).

1-meter dive: Layton King (second, 195.15), Jaron Coombs (fifth, 175.00), Reece Pederson (sixth, 169.0) and Harrison Shanklin (11th, 130.45).

Butterfly: William Walker-Rozo (first, 53.56).

100: Zac Spaulding (third, 48.17) and Grant Schaeffer (fourth, 49.23).

500: Alexander King (fifth, 5:03.80).

Backstroke: Dominic Yoder (first, 52.53), Payton Bartsch (sixth, 56.76) and Jaxon Reinke (seventh, 57.08).

Breaststroke: Jack Wolsky (second, 59.50), Griffin Schaeffer (fourth, 1:01.44) and Josh Boen (sixth, 1:01.56).

Schedule of Events

The second and final day of the state swimming and diving meet gets underway at 10:30 a.m. this morning with the diving semifinals.

The rest of the events will start at 1:15 p.m. in the afternoon.
