MSU basketball inks seven in 2019 class

Minot State head men’s basketball coach Matt Murken announced the addition of seven commitments to the Beaver men’s basketball program on Tuesday.

“This class has great balance and addresses a number of needs for our program,” said Murken. “We added some great high school talent along with some transfers that will have an immediate impact for our program. There is no doubt that the depth of this class is the best that we have recruited since I’ve been at Minot State.”

The 2019 class includes three Minot, N.D. natives and additions from Minnesota and North Carolina while two join the Beavers from Australia and Rwanda.

“I can’t say enough about the character and leadership skills of the young men that signed with us this year,” added Murken. “They will be leaders within our program and on our campus.”

Ben Bohl, Guard,

Minot, N.D.

Bohl competed in football, basketball and track for four years at Bishop Ryan. He was a two-time all-state selection in football and basketball and 2019 North Dakota Class B Senior Athlete of the Year in basketball. Bohl led Bishop Ryan to the state championship game last season after averaging 19.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game as a junior. In his senior campaign, he averaged 24.4 points, 9.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game while guiding his team to the state tournament.

Duane Goodman Jr., Guard, Charlotte, N.C.

Goodman Jr. arrives at Minot State after playing two seasons at Green Mountain College while averaging 11.3 points and 2.5 assists per game. He was named to the all-character and all-tournament team twice and was tabbed an all-conference selection in his second season. In his final two seasons of high school, Goodman Jr. averaged 17 points, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game while earned all-conference and all-region honors.

Mason Hedberg,

Guard, Minot, N.D.

Hedberg joins the Beavers after competing in basketball, baseball and track at Bishop Ryan for four years. He was a two-time all-district, all-region and all-state tournament selection in basketball after helping Bishop Ryan to the state tournament the last two years. Hedberg scored 16.7 points per game as a junior with 76 three-pointers before averaging 20.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game as a senior. Hedberg also starred on the Bishop Ryan baseball team where he was a two-time all-region selection and Region 6 Senior Athlete of the Year.

Kobe Jackson, Guard,

Tasmania, Australia

Jackson comes to Minot State from Tasmania, Australia. Jackson competed in soccer, track, cricket, football and basketball at Marist Regional College. He earned the Outstanding Service to School Award while also winning the Academic Excellence Award and Birchalls Scholarship Award.

Stephane Manzi, Forward, Nyarimbo, Rwanda

Stephane Manzi joins the Beavers after playing two seasons at Laramie County Community College. Manzi was second on the team in rebounds with 5.8 boards per game in 31 games. The Nyamirambo, Rwanda native averaged 7.5 points per game while shooting 41.8 percent from the floor. Manzi was also a 2017 Idaho state champion and all-star game participant while at Genesis Prep Academy. He earned an invitation to represent Rwanda in the NBA/FIBA Basketball Without Borders Camp.

Melvin Newbern Jr., Guard, Robbinsdale, Minn.

Newbern Jr. joined his brother for one season at Montana State Billings last year. Prior to MSU Billings, he was a two-time conference MVP and NJCAA All-American at North Dakota State College of Science. He competed in football, basketball and baseball at Robbinsdale Cooper High School while a three-time all-conference selection in basketball.

Drew Pearson, Guard, Minot, N.D.

Pearson comes to Minot State after playing two seasons at Bismarck State College where he averaged eight points and two assists in 12 minutes per game while shooting 41 percent from beyond the arc. He averaged 27 points and four assists per game in his senior season at Des-Lacs Burlington High School. Pearson was selected as District 12 and Region 6 Senior Athlete of the Year while also named to the all-state team.

MSU women’s soccer unveils 2019 schedule

Minot State head soccer coach Chris Clements announced the Beavers’ 2019 schedule on Wednesday. The campaign includes 10 home matches at Herb Parker Stadium.

Minot State will play a pair of exhibition matches at Metro State on Aug. 23 and University of Colorado – Colorado Springs on Aug. 25.

The Beavers open the season on the road at North Dakota on Tuesday, Sept. 10 before hosting Ferris State in the home opener on Sept. 13.

Minot State welcomes Montana State Billings on Sept. 17 before opening Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play with a pair of home matches on Sept. 20 and Sept. 22 against Minnesota State Moorhead and Northern State.

The Beavers hit the road for the first time in NSIC action as they venture south to take on Wayne State (Sept. 27) and Augustana (Sept. 29).

Minot State hosts Concordia-St. Paul (Oct. 4) and Minnesota State (Oct. 6) on homecoming weekend before traveling to face Bemidji State (Oct. 11) and Minnesota Crookston (13) the following weekend.

The Beavers welcome Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State in a pair of home matches on Oct. 18 and Oct. 20 while battling Upper Iowa and Winona State on the road on Oct. 25 and Oct. 27.

Minot State plays St. Cloud State (Nov. 1) and Minnesota Duluth (Nov. 3) in the final home weekend before a showdown at in-state rival U-Mary on Nov. 8.

The Beavers finished with a 13-6-3 record last season while falling to Minnesota State in the NSIC Championship. Minot State will be searching for its fourth NCAA Tournament berth in five years after falling to Bemidji State in the opening round in 2018.
