MSU baseball picks up sweep against Winona State

BRANDON, S.D. — The Minot State baseball team swept its doubleheader against Winona State on Wednesday afternoon in Brandon, South Dakota. The Beavers took the first game 5-2 before edging the Warriors 5-4 in the second game.

The Beavers are now 10-9 overall on the season and 4-3 in NSIC play while the Warriors fall to 11-10 (5-5 NSIC).

Game One:

How It Happened

The Warriors struck quick with an RBI single in the first inning to grab a 1-0 lead.

Trevaun Smith and Ryley Humrighouse reached on back-to-back singles before scoring on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly by Mason Gifford to take a 2-1 lead in the third inning.

Winona State tied the game in the fifth inning, but Darrel Doll smacked an RBI double down the right field life to score Jake Collins.

The Beavers added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning when Humrighouse hit an RBI single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael Borst.

Humrighouse, Doll and Borst led Minot State with two hits apiece.

Smith and Humrighouse scored twice each.

Starter Jaymon Cervantes improved to 4-0 this season and 9-0 in his Beaver career.

Cervantes tossed the complete-game while allowing two runs on nine hits and striking out six Warriors.

How It Happened

Smith opened the game with a double and scored on an RBI groundout from Borst to break the scoreless tie early.

Doll began the fifth with a single and touched home on an RBI double from Tyler Wiltshire to double the Beaver lead to 2-0.

The Warrior bats came alive in the fifth as WSU plated a trio of runs on four hits to take the lead.

Jake Collins blasted a two-run homer to take back the lead and Gifford added an RBI single to give the Beavers a 5-3 advantage.

The Warriors cut the deficit in half in the eighth with a run, but couldn’t get the tying run home.

Smith had a team-high two hits while seven other Beavers recorded a hit.

Collins led Minot State with two RBI while Borst, Gifford and Wiltshire added one each.

RJ Martinez improved to 2-1 on the season after throwing 5.2 innings and striking out five batters in the start.

Aaron Kern, Aaron Bernal and Matt Sartwell combined to throw two innings in relief.

Jack Gamba tallied his first save of the season after tossing the final 1.1 innings.
