Borst makes history, MSU baseball splits games against Minnesota State

MANKATO, MN – After a slow start to the day, the Minot State baseball team (8-8, 2-2 NSIC) found its rhythm on Friday and split a pair of road games against Minnesota State (12-6, 4-3 NSIC).

The Beavers suffered a 5-4 loss to their fellow NSIC competitors in the first game of the doubleheader. Trailing 4-0 entering the top of the seventh inning, Minot State launched a dramatic comeback that was capped off by Michael Borst.

Now down 4-2 with two outs, the senior singled through the left side and brought home a pair of runners to knot the score.

The score held true until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Minnesota State’s Jordan Hart hit a walk-off double that brought in the winning run and gave the Mavericks a 5-4 victory.

Minot State’s offense kept rolling in the second game of the day, though, as the Beavers lit up the scoreboard in a thrilling 10-7 victory that lasted 14 innings.

Trailing 7-5 in the top of the ninth inning with a runner on first base, junior Mason Gifford delivered with a powerful hit that sailed over the right-field fence and tied the score.

Both teams remained deadlocked at seven apiece until Borst got to the plate in the top of the 14th inning with runners on first and third base. The senior got a pitch he liked and capitalized by sending it out of the park for a home run to give Minot State a 10-7 edge.

This time the Mavericks were unable to answer in the bottom of the inning, and the Beavers secured the 10-7 win.

Borst made history in the win, breaking the record for the most hits (six) in a single game during the MSU Division II era.

Minot State will look to come out on top in today’s rubber match against Minnesota State at 6:30 p.m.
