Outlaws clobber Surrey, 56-6, to win 9-man Region 6 title

Justin Martinez/MDN Ray/Powers Lake running back Brock Viall bursts through the hole in the Outlaws' road game against Surrey on Friday.

SURREY — Senior Night started off well for the Surrey High School football team. The Mustangs honored their four seniors prior to the game against Ray/Powers Lake, bringing their parents onto the field for a heartwarming moment before they played in front of their home crowd one last time.

“These seniors came in wanting to change the culture here at Surrey,” Surrey head coach Mark Kennedy said. “They’re the big reason why we are where we’re at, and I love those kids so much. I’m proud of them for buying into change.”

But then the game started, and Surrey ran into Brock Viall.

The junior running back for Ray/Powers Lake shredded the Mustangs’ defense all night, lifting the Outlaws to a 56-6 win and their first 9-Man Region 6 title in only their second season as a co-op.

“We knew we had to be ready against a good Surrey team,” Ray/Powers Lake head coach Steven Perdue said. “We took care of business, and to win a region title is a good way to cap off the season.”

Viall made a statement in the opening quarter, finding the hole and sprinting down the sideline for the 42-yard touchdown score with 11:06 left on the clock.

It took just five minutes for the junior to find the end zone once again, this time running it in from nine yards out to give the Outlaws a 14-0 lead.

But Viall wasn’t finished. The star running back found the open field one more time and left the Mustangs’ defenders in the rearview mirror for a 42-yard touchdown run with 4:45 left in the first quarter.

Viall finished with three touchdowns and 113 yards in the first quarter alone as the Outlaws took a commanding 21-0 lead into the second quarter.

“Things were going right for me because of my offensive line,” Viall said. “It was absolutely insane how nobody could even touch me. They allowed me to get into space, use my speed and finish.”

Not much changed in the second quarter as Surrey’s offense struggled to move the ball down the field. The Mustangs finally got into the red zone with 1:10 left until halftime, but they couldn’t convert on a 4th-and-3 play and turned the ball back over to the Mustangs.

Viall made Surrey pay, breaking free for a 50-yard touchdown run to end a dominant half in which he totaled 216 yards and three scores on just 13 carries.

The Mustangs finally got on the board in the third quarter thanks to an 80-yard kickoff return for a score by junior wide receiver Cody Fuchs, but the Outlaws never allowed Surrey to find the end zone again.

Even with Viall resting for most of the second half, Ray/Powers Lake continued to light up the scoreboard, cruising to the 56-6 win.

For Surrey (6-2, 4-2), the loss is far from the end. The Mustangs must now regroup as they prepare for the 9-man Region 6 playoffs. The team is unsure who it’ll be playing, but one thing is for sure: Anything can happen.

“We just have to be able to forget about the regular season,” Kennedy said. “We’re going to come into the playoffs 0-0 just like everyone else, and we’ll have to compete.”
