Magicians qualify for State Tournament

The Minot High boys soccer team is going to the State Tournament.

The third-seeded Magicians handled their business on Saturday in Bismarck, crushing No. 6 Legacy, 5-0, to qualify for the NDHSAA State Boys Soccer Tournament. It took nearly 40 minutes for the Magi to score, but once the flood gates opened, the Sabers couldn’t stop them.

Freshman forward Jordin Lennon drew first blood for Minot High, soaring in from the left side to collect a deflected shot and send it into the back of the net with just 30 seconds left in the first half.

The second half belonged to Noah Schmidt. The junior went straight to work, scoring off an assist from Lennon in the opening minute. It took 12 minutes for Schmidt to find the back of the net again thanks to another pass from Lennon, giving Minot High a commanding 3-0 lead.

Senior forward Cody Burke got in on the scoring clinic, sending a shot past the Legacy goalkeeper in the 65th minute. Schmidt placed the finishing touches on the win two minutes later, scoring to complete the hat trick and give the Magi the 5-0 victory.

The Magi totaled 30 shots (20 on goal) compared to the Sabers’ five shots (three on goal).

With the win, Minot High is now scheduled to take on West Fargo High in the opening round of the state tournament on Thursday. The game will kick off at 6:45 p.m. at Crushman Stadium in Grand Forks.
